Johnt,
Hi,glad you found this site.
I dont want to jump the gun but have you ever tried methadone? It sounds like you have had this addiction for a long time. If you go down this heroin board you will find a lot of folks who went on methadone,me included, after exhausting other methods of staying clean. Also, go to the methadone board. there is a lot of really good, honest information there as well.
If you go to an addiction specialist, they can also prescribe suboxone. While it does nothing for the opiate cravings like methadone does,it works really well for lots of people.
Both boards have folks who dislike each way,as with anything. Choosing a treatment for yourself can be quite the challenge. For me,I stopped feeling like crap, stopped ALL withdrawal symptoms within just a few hours when I started on methadone. Since the first day I was dosed I have Not Used ONE time and I am coming up on almost 19 yrs clean. When you find a good clinic you will get counseling monthly to help you to get your life back.
Sometimes, with Suboxone, the Dr. just gives you the medicine and sends you on your way until you need a refill. Thats fine, for some i think, but if you are sincere in wanting to live drug free there needs to be more in depth treatment to help you.
Methadone has been around for many, many years and has been proven to stop heroin addiction and if you just follow the rules of the clinic you will have a real chance of having your life back. For people who have been addicted for a long time their brain is unable to produce the endorphins "our natural opiates" it needs, and when you stop using, like you have, it takes a long time for our brain to begin producing endorphins naturally on its own. During that time a patient may suffer severe depression, anhedonia(inability to feel pleasure, exhaustion, anxiety and extreme irritability.
For the ones whose brains do not return to normal endorphin production they need some sort of supplementation with an outside source of endorphin/opiates and methadone is particularly suited for that,as it does not produce a high in stable patients and remains at a steady level in the blood for a full 24 hours without the highs and lows of short acting opiates.
Ultimately,the choice is yours.
Look at all your options and make the choice thats best for you.
Good luck
