I have been sober for 8 months, and was in a rehab for 2 out of the eight, I feel good, and attend AA meetings regularly. In this short time that I have been clean, I have got an apartment, got my kids back, but with my criminal history, I cant seem to find a job. What can I do?? I dont want to go back to saleing drugs to make money, but I really need a job to support my children. I know that I really dont want any part of the life I had before I got sober, but I just want a job!!
Kim, Please, just keep trying. I'm suprised nothing has come up yet. Usually, through the meetings, some-one has an in for a job. I've noticed that employers who are in recovery try to give others a chance. I hope something happens soon. I know how discouraging it seems, when we are trying so hard and things just don't happen. Good grief Kim, you should count your lucky stars that you have remained clean for so long, and gotten your children back. That accomplishment is worth a million dollars.
I suggest you try lying about your criminal history, and work a cheap job at a fast food joint for a while. Also think about volunteer work for a while to build up references. The other thing you should do is look at the requirements in your state for having your record expunged.
But whatever you do, remember this, congratulations on a very major accomplishment in your life. Few people have accomplished a task near as difficult as yours. You bring hope to all of us addicts.
