Age When 1st Tried Heroin

Do you think there is a difference between addicts that started very early...or those that first tried heroin when they were older?

Do you think the younger you start the harder it is to stop?

If you start when you are young... you have never known an 'adult' life without heroin....maybe not always using but it is there in your life? Is it harder to cope with life?

my boyfriend started when he was only 14 and although has had periods of being clean, he is now 30 and still trying to be completly clean (he is now on methadone)
Hi sas,

I think you might be onto someting, my gf started at 16, and I started at 21, and I think that i can stop easier than my gf, even though I find it hard to. she has been on and of the gear for the past 8 years, and me 5.

Dreamer,

keep the head up, the first few days on meth is the hardest part, I find that the cravings are hard to cope with, I have went onto subs now, and am down to about 1mg I think, but yesterday I had real bad cravings, but I feel ok today, going to try and stop the subs soon.

Good luck every1.

Geo
Do you think there is a difference between addicts that started very early...or those that first tried heroin when they were older? For sure I think there is a big difference.

Do you think the younger you start the harder it is to stop? Yes, I personally started H at 24. My younger brother started H @ 15 almost 16.
He has more years in then me he's 21 now and with treatment he has not ever been clean for long. I think methadone works better on newer addicts. I started using other drugs very young pot at 10, crack 17, coke 18, drinking 14, pills 13. H was the only one that caused me to lose total control of my life the only one i had to have everyday, several times a day, was willing to do anything to get. I'm totally sober now I only used h mainline 3.5 years. I do see a STRONG connection with long time users having a much harder time stoping. I know so many people with 5 10 15 years in they only stop when in jail EVERYONE of them goes back as soon as they can.

this is my worry with boyfriend..beacuse he started so young, sometimes i think positive and think well he has already really hit rock bottom, and now has finished with all drugs now and is really making the effort to stay clean.

he said b4 yes he wanted to get clean but not 100% still enjoed the drug lifstyle and being with his friends having fun, so would end up going back to it

now he has stopped all contact with drug friends, has opened his own business and seems to really want to stop this time.....

but there are all those years of relasping that i think about,.,what really makes this time any different.

plus when you start so young, do you really know what it is like to be a normal adult...i know that sounds a bit patronising...but what i mean is little things like being responsible for your own money..yes he has in the past but now beacuse of the last relaspe his father has control of his finaces

things like that, worry me. the fact that he is so used to sneaking around, lying etc all worry me too. its all so normal to him

Geo..how are you?..did i read that you rleapsed with your gfriend in scotland? gutting for you....but glad to see you are already back on track..good luck with the subs,

zero77 my boyfriend too has used every other drug unde the sun but him, like you and loads others..only heroin that really got him. Good luck with the baby, let us all know how that is coming along (you are pregnant arent you?! keep reading things and then forgetting who is doing what!)
Hello ...Sash...i think ya got a point..i agree the earlier in life&drug taking ecology..you use smack the harder it is to rid yereslf of that addict type behavoiur. Most people go thru most other drugs before they check heroin out..i did&like was said above it was the only one bar benzos that brought me down. You learn what a certain drug is gonna do thru your teens..experience etc..but being on smack at 14 is real buck of the trend so i understand were yer b/f is coming from. Thanks for asking bout Sian on the other post ..shes keeping me busy&just a tad stressed..so much energy!.Take care...Davey
I think I went thru this already, but I cant remember. Its weird ,I tried heroin in my late teens ,early 20,s ,but it didnt grab me then. I was busy smoking weed and doing trips.
Traveling like I did back then- -all over the states from Boston to California ,I really didnt even look for that type of thing. The people I met and people I lived with werent into dope at all. We were a bunch of DeadHeads ,we went to a lot of shows and heroin wasnt part of that scene.
It was when I moved back to NY/NJ for good that I started hanging with people who were really into dope.I guess all the electric type drugs that consumed me and my time back then finally caught up with me. Dont forget ,when I got back to NY ,it was the middle of the coke scene. Every club was full of it.
Then the 80,s brought a crack epidemic to NY,which I avoided, but heroin was everywhere crack was.Looking back ,I guess I was so burnt out from other stuff- -heroin seemed like everything I was ever looking for.
So to get back to the question- I would say I was in my mid 20,s before a real addicttion kicked in. It didnt take long from the time I started sniffing at parties ,to driving alone in the middle of the night to cop.
Yeah -it wasnt long at all ,before I started hiding my problem and hussleling all day for the cash to feed that jones

Now 100 years later- mdone has taken its place, but Im not in prison and I am somewhat heathly,- accepted in my family, and a construcitive working member of society.

The people I see that started back then are very few. Many died. Many are incarcerated. Some are on mdone or sub.- It doesnt matter when you start 20-30-40 the results are the same.

peace,
jack
hey davey good to see you back posting..was thinking about you as not seen you on here for a while, glad to hear things all going ok!

personally i think that the younger you start the harder it is, but also the lenght of time you do heroin for also influences...it seems to me (only speaking from what have read here on teh boards and other info on internet...) that the longer you spend on the heroin the harder it is to get off..so i suppose the younger you start the more time you are likely to have spent using heroin, but then thats not to say that someone older will start and then use for a long time and so be in the same boat as the person who started younger.

not sure that made any sense...and really not sure how important it is..wot is important is that you have reiceived a point where you really really want to stop and do all in you power to achieve this.
i think you may have somthing i started when i was 15 and am 23 now been tryinhg hard though
