Alicap Or Wiverson ---o/t

hey girls
i have a tooth question. im scared. i have this tooth 2nd to last uppper back--that is like 3/4 a filling. it started hurting about a month ago--just sensitive to cold and heat. Then on Wednesday after i ate dinner my tooth really hurt. kinda throbbing and even my lower teeth were hurting a bit. then the pain went away.
anyway, i was at the dds about 3 mos ago and the girl said i willl probably need a crown there. How do you know if you need a root canal or crown? do they both hurt? My dds isnt open till monday so i have to wait. sorry for the jumbled post!
Usually if you need a crown, you need a root canal too and from the sound of what you are telling us about how that tooth has soo much filling in it, it is very probable that you will need a root canal and a crown....I know this was the case with my tooth and root canal and crown...

Oh, don't be scared, it is really not that bad of a procedure...
do you remember how long it takes? this is a nightmare--- i am the BIGGEST coward when it comes to the dentist......
That is the SAME exact to the word, thing that happened to me fire. Mine lasted a week because it was infected. Im assuming yours is too. YOu could save yourself a week of pain I think by just simply asking for antibiotics prior to any work being done. the whole process took way too long for me. Totally about 10 hours if you add it all up. It should only take an hour to an hour and a half. I had the hot cold thing too.
Hey Fire, you have to go back a couple of times. The first time you go when they start the root canal, this is how they did mine... First they went in and started the root canal, took out the nerve and whatever else is in there and put on a temporary crown and then I had to go back and they put in the post and core and put on the permanant crown... See, they have to match up your crown with the color of your teeth and have it especially made for you...That is why they can't do it all in one visit...Really, it is not that bad.. the day after is when I had dull pain..plus, they gave me laughing gas when I had it done.

Yeah, I'm not real fond of the dentist either, so I hear ya......
dear fire,

Years ago they did rootcanals and did not automatically give you a crown.

Now its common pracrise to right away give you a crown too.

Once your nerve is gone...there is no nutrients going to the tooth, no blood supply to the pulp and it becomes brittle...prone to break.

Personally, if i do not have a HUGE filling on that tooth, i will tell the dentist i
dont want a crown...will bide my time and SEE if it breaks...i have 2 teeth that have a 10+ old rootcanal, and yes, it discolores and turns darker ( that happens after a rootcanal..again no nutrients or blood going in and so it gets brittle and darker) but its a back tooth and its fine..

If you can see a root canal speciualist...an endodontist.....tell him your fears...make sure he gives you a topical anesthetic and if you are sensitive to epenephrine, ask for a non adrenaline anesthetic....more and more people are having a hard time with the adrenaline in epenephrine..but thats a whole other story...

If you have a huge filling,. it can probably not be replaced 9 you losse tooth structure every time you get a filling)

SDounds like your nerve is dying and you need a root canal...DO IT>>>>if you leave it, the poison from the inside of the tooth will leak out and form and ABSESS if your LUCKY..if it doesnt form an absess...then it can eat away at the bone and you could loose the tooth and any adjacent teeth...

SEE YOUR DENTIST A.S.A.P>!!!!!

I have some antibiotics ---amoxcyllin 500 mg. do you think i should start taking those??? I wonder if it would be less pain if i just got the tooth yanked out??? it is in the back... yikes!!! i hate this crap!!!!!!
Your dds will prescribe the antibiotics...Sorry guys, I still have to go back for the crown, I omitted that.
p.s.

Phone and get on an antibiotic till you can see him...you need an "O&D..

which means an open and drain....its a quick appointment and will save you

a lot of grief...and possibly lots more money and even your tooth itself if you

just leave it.....
Fire, call your dentist up and ask them about the antibiotics.. If the tooth is infected you will need antibiotics first, for one, they can't get an infected tooth numbed up...So regardless of whether you have it pulled, which would be much cheaper than a root canal and crown, you need to talk to the dentist first about the antibiotic... Mine was not infected so I never had to take antibiotics before they started working on me...

Now, as far as whether or not to have it pulled vs a root canal....heck, I think having it pulled would hurt more than a root canal, but that is just my opinion... I don't want any of my dang teeth pulled..By the way, my tooth was an upper tooth, next to the last in the back...
Thanks guys
So ali do you think the amoxcillin (spelled wrong) would be good?? oh well.
im sure they will be able to take me in right away on monday--thanks for all your replys--- i will be back online later... bye 4 now!!! fire
LOL Wendy, I knew that you were leaving something out....lol
PAM
so your root canal/crown didnt hurt that bad? what about the amoxcillin?? i have a whole script of that at my dads house--- it cant hurt if i take it right?
Fire, the procedure was not that bad at all..it was the day after that it hurt, it felt like a bruise or something like that....Anyhow, I don't know what to tell you about the antibiotic because certain antibiotics work in different ways...You know, like some are good for soft tissue infections other for bone infections and such... If I were you, I would just call up the pharmacy or dentist and tell them what you have as far as the antibiotic goes and ask them if it is okay to take it... I would just hate to tell you to take what you have and it be ineffective and then you have to take another antibiotic.. I hope that made sense.......
Amox...is used for certain infections.

call your dentist..your antibiotic has to target the specific infection.

IT CAN HURT to take antibiotics too often...when you need them for your life..

you wont react to them...you develop tolerance to antibiotics...HONESTLY!!!

Hugs,

Ali
Fire,

There is a big problem if you take an antibiotic, and even if it works, you think oh..im fine...thats when all the toxins from inside your pulp start to eat away at the tooth, the bone surrounding the tooth etc....

Even if it feels better GO..ive seen too many people lose teeth by ignoring a tooth that flared up and then...."got better"

Hugs,

Ali
Ali is right but yes, that is what my dds prescribed for me exactly. Amox 500 mgs.
Clyndamyacin is usualy used for oral infections. That or Penicilin. Not sure if the Amoxycilin is that same type. I have had three root canals on three different ocasions, I didnt feel a THING. Of course I was using at the time so I would not take my experience to heart.
Ben
I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with your tooth. I have had root canals and they don't hurt half as bad as the pain you are having now. I agree with all the above posts.

I do want to encourage you strongly not to take any medication that is not perscribed for you. To me, doing so is part of our old patterns of addictive behavior. I know many of us would take anyone elses drug if we had the chance. Just my opinion, but I think it's setting up a way of thinking that could be risky.

elsiejean
OH honey

forgot to mention that although amox... is used for tooth infections, they do have a shelf life. i once took an old expired antibiotic and on day 3 had the worst rash...eyes swollen shut and welts all over...my dr ant the time had never seen anything like it in her life.....( i still have pictures...lol)

Elsie jean is right, dont take someone elses prescriptions....do you have any allergies to ANY thing???

Hope you get that tooth looked at..once you loose it, its GONE...we dont grow a new one and implants are far less appealing...

Hugs
