I have a family member who has a history of using heroin. He recently has stated that because of a small amount of jail time he is sober. He now is asking for money to get himself back on his feet. he is not in my city so I can not tell. he has a history of blowing money quickly, i don't want to just give it to him and have him use it for something else, but I really want to trust him, I just don't know if I can trust the disease. Any advice??
offer to write checks and pay his bills, that way you will know where your money has gone.
firstly. dont EVER give money or cash or a cheque to an addict. it will take a long time in recovery before you can trust an addict with cash.
ask him to send you the bills and you'll pay them
this is a good little "test" to see where he's at.
because he HAS to send you the bill which means doing something, which is a pain.
