Just turned on this channel and its talking about opioid crisis in America.. Thought people might find it interesting if you can catch it now. Otherwise you can see it on their website.
Thanks Mary. I got on here too late to see it but I'll look for it on their website.

Hi Michelle, It was very interesting! Certainly should have been aired years ago, now it's finally caught the attention of the media. I heard today on the radio in the car that this drug crisis is wiping out a whole generation of the middle class. Terrible! Take care Shell. Mary
Mary,
I watched it this morning. It was interesting and I completely agree with preventing people from ever turning to heroin by limiting access to prescription opiods but none of these shows focus on what could help our addicts. You know why? Because they know that it's a losing battle and that there's nothing that will make current addicts not be addicts. It's depressing. Even the town meetings that I've went to focus on prevention and not much is talked about as far as helping addicts. They have one really great resource in our town for addicts to go to if they want help and then begins the long journey that most of them give up on. What is it, about a 10% success rate? Not good enough.

Hi Shell, It's on the whole week long so here's hoping their going to talk about new ideas on curing the addict. I'm sick of the old ways that are next to useless too. I agree with you about how difficult it is to cure and how it's an uphill battle for so many. Mary
Still boils down to the one thing and that is our addicts "wanting" to get clean and get help. They can have all the help, ideas, rehabs, drugs to help get off DOC,etc. but unless the addict wants it--nothing works.
I don't have any good ideas or suggestions on how to "help" our addicts or "cure" them and I don't think the establishment does either!
My son will never be free of addiction because he doesn't want to be free of it and unless he changes --nothing changes!

Lori,
Yes, I agree that our addicts have to want the change but I don't think it's that simple for them to stay clean. I don't know much about the long term effects of other drugs on the brain but the effects that heroin have on the brain make it very hard to stay clean. I know that my son has never been the type of person to do something if it's very hard, even when he was a child. Knowing what it takes to stay clean makes me believe that it will be almost impossible for him to succeed. I just think that there is still so much stigma attached to heroin addiction, it doesn't get taken seriously as a disease. I think people think, "good riddance". Well, these are our children. Our government definitely has the power to do something about it. It's been proven that long term treatment - 12-18 months is one of the most successful ways to treat heroin addiction yet no insurance will approve that long of treatment and especially not state funded insurance. Don't get me wrong, I, in no way, think we should coddle or enable our addicts but I know there's better treatment out there that isn't available to them.

Hi. It's has to be different for every addict. Everyone is very different.some addicts would cringe at doing long term rehab.even if it were free.
Brandon,
That is true.
That is true.
If "they" can come up with Suboxone and Methadone and now there's another couple. There must be something in the making to stop this insanity. Easter is a time for miracles! Let's hope that soon will be our time for a miracle that will cure our addicts. How I wish and pray for that. I agree it would be hard to be in long time rehab. But surely knowing that at the end of it all you'd be clean and sober, would be worth it? Mary.
