Knew THAT title would getcha! No guns, But plenty Bible Stuff:Last week, in the hall of my apt. bldg. I found a Gideon Bible. Since I was raised a heathen, this is new reading material for me. I have a copy of the Koran, in english, a gift from a pal(have read it, too) so I brought the Gideon upstairs & have been reading it of an evening. The thing that most amazes me is how many phrases from the Bible there are in everyday English! Not just quotations from Jesus but simple phrases, an example escapes me right now, but it's pretty neat. Thing is: I think Jesus was a great guy, v. smart, w/ a wonderful new idea:Compassion for all,Living Kindly. Here's what I have a problem with: I hate the idea of this nice decent person being blamed for MY sins. I did them, I'll take the rap for them! Or am I being really obtuse here, missing the point? Here is one wee passage that I thought applied to folks here(I think of you all even when I am not w/you): "Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.Sufficient for the day is its own trouble"-Matthew 6:34 Anyone else have a fave phrase?
for this my son was dead, and is alive again;he was lost and is found.

Well, I don't have a quote. I wanted to say I was raised without any religion no chrurch no bible. I relise how very rare that is. Even my grandparents never went to a church or made God a daily thing. We never even went to church on the holidays. God was never talked about. Sometimes I wish with all my heart that I had "faith" something to make all the crappy days better. I do think beliving makes life in general easier. I don't think God keeps me clean or stops me from using. I'm also greatful sometimes that God is not a influence in what I do. How I want to cling to that "something outside yourself theory": I'm just not sure it's there. Strong bible thumpers scare me to death "seem brain washed". The whole Christian thing eludes me. I think it's easier to belive when the seeds were planted when you were very young. I have allowed my kids to go to summer bible school "against my fathers wishes". I hope they will have God to turn to. I'm now caught between maybe there is maybe there is not a God.
Zerogirl: I am sad for you. I was raised in church and went to Christian schools. I cannot imagine getting through the bad times without God. I don't like to shove my beliefs down anyones throat. But I do know that Heaven and Hell are very real. Maybe you could go out and get a King James Bible and read the book of Romans. That may answer some of your questions.
Jesus did die for our sins so we would not have to pay the eternal price. And if we don't acknowledge this and trust Him as our Saviour we will burn in Hell for eternity.

"Lost and Found"...beautiful quote, Bruce. ZeeGee, I too was raised in a house w/o Religion. My Ma said she'd take me if I ever wanted to go but she felt some folks used church as an excuse to be awful 6 days a week;as long as they went to church on Sunday, & she'd rather be decent all week long.So we never went.I was married in City Hall in downtown L.A.No church wedding for us;my Lutheran Mother-in-Law was not impressed. Frankly, I've had a real problem w/ the Deity since 9/11, to be honest THAT event really did a number on my head...I read all the Obits in the NY Times, all those folks seemed so decent & good & if God wanted 3000+ folks that day, why didn't He take ME, I am of no use to anyone, just a dumb drug addict, no kids, no job, an oxygen thief.I was very angry w/ Him for a long time, & only now am I trying to understand "Religion", more on an intellectual level, reading The Bible & the Koran as literature. ..Trying to understand HOW these writings can make folks act so nutty. Is there a Buddhist "Bible"?Does anyone know?

Alaska, Was wondering what happened to the post from April? Shay
Wow, far out, looks like her post has been "terminated with extreme predjudice" ?? WHAT on earth could she have said to get folks so angry @ her? I am also suprized there are "Powers That Be" w/ the ability to make someone...go away like that. Whoa! Will mind my p's & q's from now on.
Alaska the thread was pulled as it has nothing to do with recovery.

There isn't a Buddhist Bible as such but there is the Tipiaka also known as Pali Canon, which is the basis for the traditional teaching of the Theravada section of Buddhism, but all the other Buddhist teachings such as Zen, Lamaism, Tendai etc have their variations but from what I can understand the Tipiaka is the easiest to understand.
If you're interested in spiritual teachings the Bhagavad Gita which is sort of the Hindu Bible is also worth a read.

I bought the dhammapada, I haven't read it yet but it looks like I should, ha ha. Finished the Dharma of Star Wars though!
Alaska, that's really neat that you read the Bible. Don't fret, even devout Christians question certain ideas, it is after all pretty deep. I believe it is necessary for Christ's to have died for our sins. That's because we don't have the power to intercede for our own sins to the extent that he did. You see, He (Jesus) was God on earth. That's an idea that escapes us sometimes. You see, God could not truly understand the flesh and its human condition if he had not sent a part of Himself, His son, to earth to experience human life. That's what Jesus was doing here. The message Jesus sent back to the Father (God) was that he needed to have mercy. He understood that we sinned, but loved us in our sin. So, He gave us a way around the price of sin which is death. He petitioned God for us. Being the son of God (part of God), He, and only He could do that and actually get the Father's attention. And how did he petition God, in the most awesome way and expression possible, He forfeited His own human life. Being part God, this was no small sacrifice. God could have given His Son anything, and would have. Yet, what did His son request? Our life eternal complete with forgiveness. And what stipulation is on this? We only have to say, "Yes, Jesus.". Truly, the most humbling experiences a man can have. The fact being, we don't deserve it, we don't earn it, it is a gift of purest love that we call grace.
.It is Christ-Christ who died, and, more than that, was raised from the dead-who is at God's right hand, and indeed pleads our cause. Then what can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or hardship? Can persecution, hunger, nakedness, peril, or the sword? We are being done to death for thy sake all day long, " as Scripture says; "We have been treated like sheep for slaughter- and yet, in spite of all, overwhelming victory is ours through him who loved us. For I am convinced that there is nothing in death or life, in the realm of spirits or superhuman powers, in the forces of the universe, in heights or depths-nothing in all creation that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Wow, Lois, thanks for spelling it out for me,about Jesus & mercy, etc. Like the Native Americans say "Never judge till you walk a mile in a man's moccasins"--I guess you could say Jesus walked a mile in our moccasins, then told God how hard it is to be human. Thanks to all who responded;it's nice to know there are other "seekers" out there, too.
O.K. so Bruce B is cute. That first and foremost.
Oh Alaska girlie, girl you crack me up even when you don't want to. Are you a dag gone dagging Aquarian?
O.K. my quote would be something regarding Job. I just love that Job stuff. I mean the poor dude just couldn't get a break.
Catholic here. We are like the mafia. You can not get out. Like Tom Cruise's lady/incubator she is a Scientologist, but a Catholic first. I'll tell ya nuns they don't preach from no Bible. They teach you life lessons, and sometimes you get whacked or sometimes you get your head stuck in a bucket of dirty water. Wacky as nuns could be i have respect as they are usually very well educated, and have to raise up other people's children all day long. Some career. It's a vocation ya know? So I pray for all the nuns who taught us, and gave over their lives to teach snot nosed kids like we were.
Meanwhile back at the ranch. My Ma says just because somebody is sitting in Church all the time it will not get them to heaven any faster. Example being grandmom's who wear the little feet pins who are anti-abortion, but refuse to watch their grandchildren at any point. She says getting dressed up, and perfumed, and sitting in aircondition Church while your children are struggling with their own kids does not give you a pass to heaven. Real people who help others and give selflessly stand a better chance heading in those gates faster.
My view is I need my God to get through every single minute, and I rather go to Baptist Church with singing than my own Church, but either way or none I have a fierce attachment, and gratefullness to God of my understanding for helping me through today.
Kewl beans Alaska.

Bryn, Yes, indeed the Catholic church is a rather formiadble organisation to go up against-Ask the Commies:they'll tell you.I recall reading where the KGB was afraid of a local pastor in Poland who supported Solidarity, they were afraid he'd get elected Bishop of Warsaw--WRONG! The Catholics elected him POPE! Check, & checkmate, Baby--You do not want to mess w/ an Organisation who have been running covert ops since the days of the Roman Empire....My Ma belives the same thing: be a decent person all week instead of just on Sundays.By the way Bryn, I am a Scorpio,Oct.27.
Alaska, you are very welcome. You have got it down exactly - God's son walked a mile in our mocassins and petitioned on our behalf. That has given us all a way to being saved.

This caption caught my eye! :) And, yes, Bruce B is cute - I love the picture - it says a thousand words!
My favorite Bible quote: "Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1" Sometimes, even when you can't see no way out, you just gotta walk in faith!

That is a good one, Mother W.

Right? Bruce B. now has a fan club. C-U-T-E.
