Can anyone help me. My husband has smoking pot for a long time now. He has a medical condition (stomach) that causes him to get very sick every now and then leading to taking him to the emergency room. He says that his pot smoking addiction helps him cope with it. He wants to quit, but isn't possible of doing so. I know that marajuana is prescribed for medical purposes, he dosen't have a prescription, but it's come to the point where he relies on it to have a normal life day to day. How can I help him quit? He relies on the drug to help him feel better. We have seen many specialist about his medical condition and no one can tell us what is wrong with him. Is there any evidence that pot can cause someone to have stomach problems? If anyone can give me some answers that would be much appreciated.
Pot is used by some cancer patients who are experiencing weight loss due to chemo induced nasuea. I have not personally heard of pot causing the nasuea, and frankly, if you husband really needs the pot, he could confer with a Dr. and perhaps get a prescription (not sure how this works, but I know that Marinol is prescribed to cancer patients).
Insofar as helping your husband quit, your efforts will likely be pretty frustrating until he acknowleges that he has a problem and decides to do something about it. Even then, the normal course is to go through a number of attempts to quit by will power alone or to control one's use. Most who have crossed the line from casual use to abuse eventually have to face up to the fact that these remedies do not work well.
For a pot abuser, the first real step comes in acknowleging the addiction. Many take a long time to get to this point, since our cultural conditoning tells us that it is only pot. However, once a person realizes that he is an addict, he can then choose to get serious about getting help for his addiction. It is only then that the real healing begins.
All of this is based solely on my personal experience. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.
