Anyone Else From Canada?

Someone very kind earlier suggested suboxone and since it isn't available in Canada, does anyone know if there is some kind of equivalant drug to help with oxy withdrawl?

If you read this and you can help, PLEASE respond? I am full of worry at what is ahead of me...Thank you so much!

Jennelle
Jennelle - Please realize one thing, opiate withdrawal can be uncomfortable, but it is not life-threating. I am not a fan of sub. because of some literature I read, but it helps some people as you will find out here. See if you can just stop...and good luck. You will feel great once you are done... :-)
Eddie, How long is withdrawl? Right now what I find at 2-3 hrs before my next dose is terrible...I can hardly imagine if it gets worse...and from what I read it certainly does. How do you wean off of pills that cannot be cut? Someone mentioned weaning down my 2 or 3 mg a day (my pills are 40mg and they are very tiny) I was told that day 4 is the worst, and to me 4 days seems really long.
(I have 4 young kids) I can't afford bedrest and long baths, but the creepy skin thing and the restless limbs is unbearable, and this is BEFORE I have weaned!!!
Sorry to sound like a complainer, I know you have all gone through worse.
Thanks for your reply Jenn
Jennelle - I think I read that you are taking 2x40mg of oxy a day and you had some percs in the med cabinet (85?).

DON'T cut the oxy's. They are time released and by cutting them, you put a dangerous amount of opiates in your system. My advice is to see your doctor. You can't taper with oxy 40mg. Your doctor may tell you to stop the oxy, use the percs, and then down to darvocet. I gotta be honest though, there's no magical way. You have to go through it. A clonidine patch will help with withdrawal symptorms. Whatever you do, don't take any Benzodiazepines unless your doctor prescribes a small amount for a short period. Opiate withdrawal is not pleasant but Benzo withdrawal can be life-threatening. Also, even with 4 kids, you may need some support. Many people here advocate NA meetings to help. You may want to evaluate that.
Hi Jennelle - I didn't answer your original question because withdrawal time depends on the amount you are on, the type of drug, the duration of usage, age, mental status, etc..it varies from person to person. Max is a couple of weeks. Could be as little as a day or two.
Thanks Eddie, I have never felt cravings, you know...never wanted to get a high! It was for pain relief only and I wonder, am I likely to feel those kind of cravings after, even if I still haven't felt them? The first while, I felt some sort of "euphoria" or relaxation, but mostly I was satisfied with the level of pain relief. ( I had been on ms-contin and perc.) Even when that feeling went away, I couldn't care less, if I want a buzz, I'll have a glass of wine or 2 you know, without the threat of withdrawl. But just out of the blue, the pain and the withdrawl starts to set in 7-8 hours, and now I am concerned. I have never felt withdrawl symptoms until just recently and to be honest, I am terrified.

I started by reading everyone's entries, and I have a huge amount of respect for everyone here. Thanks for responding. I have a hard time believing that anyone could bother with me without even knowing me.

Eddie, can I ask you what was in the literature about sub that you saw as a negative. It worked well for me but I know not everyones the same.

Thanks
JD
JD - I think there were a few things that struck me...there were like 30+ different types of adverse events, I believe it was addictive, hepatitis could be an issue. I think there was also a small clinical trial patient population for suboxone. I have heard that it's been successfully used overseas though. Hey, if it's approved and you want to use it....FDA knows more than me. Ya gotta wonder though, with 30+ AEs, is one helping themselves or opening the door for other problems....+ it's potentially addicting. What would be next, taking another medicine to get off the sub? It's all very confusing to me.

The good part about sub is you are getting a more educated doctor. Mandatory training with restrictions on how many people they can treat!! Good luck with it. I would love to hear from people that have been both successful and unsuccessful from treatment. It is early on though...
