Hi my name is Sara and in in Wheaton, Illinois. I had been using vicoden and oxy's for the past 4 years. In April 2005 I had started a methadone program and then detoxed off it September 22, 2005. My probation officer wants me to go to a half-way house, any feed back on what there like?
I guess my opinions on halfway houses may be a bit bias since I work at one, but from what I see here, the clients seem to do well. There are some people that are just here because they need a place to live till they get on their feet but for the most part, if you want to stay clean and learn how to live sober, I would suggest a halfway house. Personally, I've never lived in one. I don't think I would be able to live with bunch of strangers but that's me. I say go for it. You can always move if you don't like it.
Thank you, I have somewere to live and I heard people do that alot (live there cuz they have no other place to live). I think I'm doing great right now. My son is currently in foster care in the the state of Indiana, not that its matters where my son is but I think I ' ll have a better chance of getting him back sooner if I complete the program. I want to go in but I also heard sometimes there is drug use, I don't want to be in that situation of being around people who use. But senice I've been out of the hospital I really miss doing meeting and stuff, I currently don't have a car and getting around is very hard.
when I was in rehab... they wanted me to go to a half way house and said that it was going to be really hard for me to stay clean if I went back into the invironment that I was in if I didnt... I refused .... I should have listened... I didnt relapse but I wasnt in recovery for a long time just clean and misterable.... I didnt take the suggestion of those that might know better and I really did take a big chance ... I was lucky ..very lucky. I will not make that mistake again. I would really think about it. I think it could be a really good learning experience and each of our experiences can be used to make us stronger in some way.

Is was once asked " How long have you been doing things your way?" Well, all my life I had answered. But now for once I 'm putting my life in someone elses hands, this time I think I'll get better results, I'll go cuz I know its the right thing to do, Thank you all for everything.
Good for you, Sara. I like your attitude. My way didn't work for me either. Thank God there were people that were willing to show me how to do it a different way. You'll be fine. Trust your gut on this decision. If it feels like the thing to do, do it.
My friends sister has been addicted to "everything" since she was probably 14,
I honestly don't know how she is still alive. Now in prison, her family is really glad b/c they know where she is and they say she can't get drugs. They say they hear stories about more drugs being in prison than out but where she is, they are able to visit sometimes and they can tell she's clean. She's not the type to clean up just for their visit - she's now in early 40's.
Anyway, she did her best during all these years in halfway houses. Really worked, they drove her to and from work after helping her find a job, you can earn some money even when drawing disability. Back then you could receive disability for being and addict but that was stopped, by then she had mental problems so the Halfway House would help her plan her money - even saving which she had never done. She never had a "home" The family learned fast not to let her stay with them b/c she would leave and take what she could. Her Family has said they wished she had stuck to this but Halfway Houses work to make you independant and as soon as she would be on her own, it was back to drugs even though her Mother was in charge of her monthly check, she still found a way.
Anyway, this is really a drastic story b/c she has never really experienced life, that's sad. I know the Halfway houses worked better for her than anything ever has.
I know your life sounds nothing as drastic as this - but wanted you to know that if she did well there, I feel you would.
Much luck,
Jean

Thank you Jean very much for your story. I do need my life back and can't wait til I learn more new things on living life on life's terms.
I went to a halfway house as it was suggested by my drug counselor in 1988.
My DOC was cocaine and I had already been to a rehab in 1987.
I went to the halfway house and it helped me a lot. But YOU must want to go.
Your probation officer must have there reasonsfor you to go that route. Do you trust your probation officer? If yes then Go.
Good -Luck--Jeff

Hey Sara,
It was suggested to me to go into a half way house too. I didn't go in because I have two kids and wouldn't know how I would have my visits with them if I were in there. But with you, not having custody of your son, it probably would be a good idea. This way eventually you will get him back plus you will get help to stay clean and learn how to live a clean life. I wish you the best of luck. I'm still debating on whether I will eventually get into a half way house.
If you go would you be able to post here still? If so I would love to hear how it's going while you're there.
Love,
Liz

I had just gotten off the phone with my P.O. she wasn't to pleased with me cuz I had an appointment with a half-way house on the 15th but was not able to get there cuz of no ride. Damm she said they want to revoke my probation, I have court on Monday the 21st and she's going to tell the judge that I did not go, dam I don't want to back to jail.
Why Didn't you call your PO at that time and explain you didn't have a ride there? Maybe if you convince here you really believe it's a great idea you get in the half way house might help you?
There all excuses she said ( I also just started and new job in witch I walk to everyday and did work on the 15th ) she said if there's a will theres a way, I don't even have a dollor to my name.
man, that sucks. So easy for them to say if there is a will there's a way. I hate that saying for real.
Well, just show the judge you were working that day and explain to him about not having transportation or money to even get a taxi. He's the one you have to convince anyway.

I was thinking of writing him a letter, cuz he doesn't know me as a person, he just see's the trouble I ' ve been in, think that's a good idea?
sara if your lookin for a half way house just come over to my house,we have all kinds of nut cases runnin around here................vinny.
Hey Vinny,
What, is my family visiting you? LOL
Sara, I don't see why it would hurt writing the judge. I've done that in my custody case and it actually helped me some.
