Are Addicts/alkies Able To Take A Break In Using?

Can an alcoholic and/or addict actually take a break in maximum usage? I've seen it but it might last an evening and the next day their back to their usual routine with vengeance. Is that withdrawal or they mentally miss their usual high?

Sometimes I think some addicts/alkies go into rehab for a break even though it's controlled.
the pattern I am seeing in my son is that he has a paycheck evry 2 weeks. gets pay, goes on a binge?, he goes to work, but goes out after work "to a friends house, working on someones car, doing music" , comes home after midnight, goes to work on time in the morning. out of cash by end of week. stays home, goes to gym sometimes, does chores, communicates. A whole week of this - I think He's changing, finally had enough. Next week will be different. He says it will. pay check comes - zoom - gone!

regarding rehab as a break. my son has been to detox and rehab 3 times. each time it was after a year long relapse where he got to the point of everything gone and nothing left and not able to function. each time he stayed sober from 3 to 4 months. then repeat. I think the rehab sets the clock back to zero - detox and now able to 'handle' it again.

maybe my son is not a maximum user, maybe is still using on his dry week and will owe people $ at week's end.

My son swears he's not using because he doesn't have any money for it. But we all know he is a pathological liar & either hallucinates or just doesn't have a grasp on reality. When he is using he comes up with the irrational "tales" & outrageous stories that people (strangers & loved ones) have said or done to him, none of which are true
