I was once an oral surgery nurse, in the late seventies. Vicodin came out then, and it seems that even to this DAY no one knows if it contains codeine or NOT.
I have been told by everyone from physicians to the drug reps themselves that it does not, and i have also heard that IT DOES.
My mother and I are deathly allergic to codeine (violently ill and vomiting, lowered bp etc;) and my sister and brother in law just got mom a prescription for hydrocodone with apap, and i'm freaking out saying that mom shoudln't take it cos it's got codeine in it. Does anyone know for sure?
thank you so much
tm
I hope someone answers this question because I am allergic to codine as well, yet my Dr. prescribed me Hydrocodone for lower back pain and I hade a ruptured cyst. I told him I was allergic to codine. He also gave me phenagrin (msp) to keep me from throwing up. Whatever. I dont know. Ill keep track of this thread.

Both codiene and hydrocodone are opiates but they are different. Just because you are allergic to codiene does not mean you will be allergic to hydrocodone.
Hi,
I guess I'm a little paranoid, but it always sounds like people are seeking info. on what it is there taking by trying to make it sound legit. I hope the motives are sincere, if not, stop using and you won't have to worry about it.
Seems to me that the doctor should be aware of the alergy, and would I'm sure prescribe accordingly. It doesn't make sence to me to ask a question like that of a bunch of strangers on a recovery board something that would make you so sick, instead of just asking your doctor. Trusting us over your doctor just doesn't make sence to me, unless your just asking if it's safe so you can use,
in that case you probably didn't even consult a doctor and your in the wrong place to find out whats a safe drug to get off on. Anyone here could probably get in alot of trouble if the wrong info is given out anyway.
In any case.......Take care.............................God bless.......................Bob

bob, that is a VERY GOOD POINT. HA.
I have been in the medical field for 25 years, and doctors make plenty mistakes, believe me. My nephew is a kidney specialist, and belive me i'm NOT relying on strangers for my final conclusion.
I just thought perhaps I would get many different 'experiences' from those who have already gone thru the ordeal, and I would weigh the answers I get here against those I get from the pharmacy, the physicians, etc;
You are sweet in your opinion, and I respect it, with a smile.
I guess I DID make it sound like I was waiting for answers from this board and I was going to "treat" my mother according to these answers. In reading it back, it indeed sounded like that!
I have an extensive medical background as I said, and believe me, a mind is much more receptive when its left OPEN. Experience is the best teacher, and sometimes even doctors don't have the knowledge of those who have BEEN THERE. I know my doctor of 20 years used to say I amazed him, because I would tell him things that HE HADN'T heard of before! They aren't gods, they are human like us, and as such subject to mistakes too.
But the vicodin-codiene mystery is a hard one to get straight answers on, EVEN talking to the experts, believe me. But there are no better drug experts than on these boards - Many have WALKED THE WALK, and that qualifies them to TALK THE TALK, ya know what I mean Bob?
Thanks all
I ended up telling mom to just take half tonite, and if she's fine with that, tomorrow eve she can take a whole one. (That was also advice her doctor gave her today)

mrsmc- if you google, you can find out. Ya, we all know and you are right, even the guys from heaven (Doctors) make mistakes. So it's ok to get advice here and ok to do your own research. Another thing I found is if you have questions, ask the pharmacy. Now, THEY are experts. Call 2 or 3 if you want to be sure, but they have never been wrong with me, where my Doctor has. (As has my lawyer and realtor)..
