For anyone who may considering treatment at Arms Acres:
My wife went to Arms Acres recently for prescription painkiller detox and rehab, and the experience was VERY disappointing.
The majority of the patients were lifetime street addicts, and there due to court ordered treatment. The facility was disgustingly dirty, and the advertised facilities (swimming, actupuncture) weren't available during her two-week stay. The food was worse than any hospital or airline, and she actually lost weight during her stay (great for a weight-loss center, not for a recovering addict).
We transferred to Hazelden in Manhattan for outpatient treatment instead, and so far, are having much better success. Other patients (and even the staff at Arms Acres) highly recommended Mountainview and Silver Hill in Connecticut as much better inpatient alternatives.
If you are a professional, educated person, and want to be in an environment with similar people who desire to get help and get better, consider anywhere other than Arms Acres.
Is arms acres state run or do u have to pay there. Treatment centers have always been a nervous pet peeve of mine.
Glad your wife is doing better. Good luck to you both.

my boyfriend went to arms acres not to long ago and he'd call me up crying about the conditions. i thought he was just manipulating me to take him home early. after a week i went up for a family group which was a joke and saw the place for myself. the conditions were terrible and the food was made for dogs. while i was there he was albe to talk freely about the place and say things he couldn't say over the phone because they were listening. he was in there for heroin and it was easier for him to cop dope up there then it was for him in the city. plus he said if u went the the nurses and acted like u were going through withdrawl they'd fill u up on synthetic opiates. he finished out his stay because i wouldn't come and get him but because he hadn't stopped using there he didn't last 12hours once he was home. i went to silver hill hospital myself and it was a wonderful wonderful place and they accept medicare and private insurances - i highly recomend them.
