Hi, I read your blog. You write very well and tell an inspiring story. I'd encourage anyone who hasn't read it to do so.
Hey, I'm going to assume you're from the bay area, which is where I grew up. I have a trivial question for you if you don't mind. There was a radio station that I listened to and a friend and I can't remember the exact number of it. It was KMEL (rocking the bay.....lol). They used to have billboards around with a big camel with sunglasses advertising the station. Was it 106? It may not even exist anymore. This was about fifteen years ago. Oh, and is the cow palace still there? Saw many concerts in that place. thanks! Love, Kat
Hey Kat,
Thanks! So nice to hear confirmation that years of frying my brain didn't completely undo the writing skills I developed as a teenager.
To answer your question, I'm actually in LA. Grew up in NY, went to school at Cornell in upstate NY, spent 6 months working on wall street before I was ready to blow my brains out, moved to Colorado and drove a bus at a ski resort (which was much, much better living), then moved to LA on a whim. Been here 6 years next month. I'm not familiar with the radio station you're talking about, but I can tell you that the Cow Palace is still there. In fact me and a few of my psycho-Deadhead friends stopped by there a few weeks ago before a Phil Lesh show in SF to pay homage to the venue that housed so many great Dead shows. :-)
Thanks again for reading, it means a lot.
How are you doing?

ohhhh I was close, Gina!! How did you know? lol, nevermind, you'll fill me in later.
Glad to hear the cow palace still exists. Boy, the things they got away with back then! I wouldn't want to say anything trigger like here, but I can only remember bits and pieces of the few dead head concerts I went to. (pretty sure I enjoyed them, lol) Even as a teenager, most of the people attending were alot older than I was. They were a friendly bunch though. I think ZZtop was my favorite concert there....but they were all good. Funny how a building can carry such memories, huh?
I really did enjoy your blog. It's one of the best I've read. Some bore you to tears but I didn't miss a word of yours. Love, Kat

Kat,
We spent our last sabbatical in Berkeley.
I'm not quite awake yet -- why would the Cow Palace trigger anyone? Sorry to be so dense.

The Cow Palace is where the Grateful Dead, and many other great bands, played some of their best concerts. Many of us probably have memories (or not!) of using there. But personaly, even though I've been to hundreds of concerts, high more often than not, music for me isn't a trigger, but rather an integral part of my early recovery.
Just read your blog of the day, Matt. I beg to differ. Thinking about God had better be prayer, because that's all I do -- just think.
BTW, what is this for you? Day 11? How're you feeling?

Today's Day 15. Feeling OK, still kinda weak, and my appetite has not really returned. But I'm going to meetings every chance I get (17 so far), and to quote a fellow addict, "I'm going after my recovery like I used to go after my drugs"
Thanks for checking in. How are you doing?

Matt,
More than two weeks! Good for you. Sounds like you're hitting this disease from every direction.
I'm good, thank you for asking. Some days are better, some worse. Today is better. I'm getting so that, now and again, I can reach a place of contentment that I used to look for through opiates. This is real, those were counterfeits. I didn't realize that fully til I found this board.
Love,
Gina

Kmel rocked! Well, at least I thought it did. Glad to know it's still there.
Gina, I don't think the cow palace would trigger anyone, lol, but I didn't want to go into details of what was being passed around or what I did there. For all I know we might have all laughed over similar experiences, but I'd feel bad if I said something that bothered anybody. Concerts were notorious back in the day. I'd like to think it isn't so much like that now, if it is I won't let my kids go to any, lol. Love, Kat
