Hi ladies,
Anyone else have trouble sleeping? I've taken pills 4, 25 years. Before I retired, I told myself, After I quit working, I'm sleeping in everyday. What a joke. Now that I don't have 2 get up, I'm out of bed at 5:30 a.m.; I can't sleep. My husband's asleep, in minutes. It takes me anywhere from a half-hour, 2 hours 2 fall asleep. And sometimes the arthritis is so painful, I take 2 or 3 pain pills, besides.
BonnieRose.........the pain pills kept me awake. After eating pills all day, even if I stopped by 7 pm, I couldn't sleep without taking something for sleep.
Are you still taking pills? If so, that could be it. If not, the w/d could be causing your lack of sleep.

I was the same way....
I've had insomnia since my son was born almost 4 years ago, but it was a hundred times worse the last three years while I was addicted to pain pills. I never put two and two together; just thought it was due to being a mom and took Ambien every single night.
When I first got off of the pain pills, the sleeplessness was even worse.... but now I've been clean almost 3 months and it's A LOT better. I still take Ambien about 3 times a week, but I was taking them once or twice EVERY night.
I still don't sleep very much.... I wake up a bunch during the night, with or without the sleeping pills.... but it gets better and better the longer I'm off the Vicodin.
Everyone on here knows that I'm very pro-Ambien. I think it's the best sleeping pill in the world, but it IS habit-forming and us addicts have to worry about that (though, unlike other Benzos or sleeping aids, Ambien is out of your system in only 2 hours, so you don't go through withdrawal when you get off of them because you are, essentially, going through little withdrawals every morning. And it's so expensive that most people can't afford to take it very long... I pay $50 for 30 of them, but since at one point I was taking 2 pills twice a night, any other prescriptions cost me $120 a piece).
Are you still taking pain pills? If you are, this is all the more reason for you to get off..... If not and you are newly clean, then try to give it time or try taking something like Benadryl to see if that helps.
It DOES get better.

There are several non-narcotic sleep aides which can be prescribed for you. One of them is Trazodone, which I use occasionally to help me sleep.....and it really works. Check with your MD to get something which is not addicting. Ambien should never be used for over 30 days because of its highly addicting properties. And please don't resort to OTC meds such as Benadryl.....which has a rebound effect and can actually increase your insomnia......or Nyquil which has alcohol in it.
Trazadone is crap.
LOL
Doesnt work.

2 trideItmom, Coolbeans, Danielle, Kysharon, Kiwirain: Thanks.
I believe I've tried everything over the years, Lunesta and Ambien included.
I think sleeplessness is a woman-thing: Our bodies go thru so many changes,
we're sensitive, and can't shut off our minds. I've tried praying. I exercise. I walk 5 miles a day. I'm active, daylong. Well, thanks 4 the input, ladies!!!

Kiwi,
I value your opinions and agree with you on most things, lol. But we will have to agree to disagree on Trazedone,,,,,it works wonders for me.
Bonnie,
Insomnia is not just a woman thing when you are an addcit in the beginning stages of Recovery. One of the main s/e's of coming off opiates is insomnia (severe in many cases). Its because the Opiates was producing seretonin for you while you were on them and the brain quit making natural seretonin and endorphins for you. Then when you come off opiates, it takes awhile for the brain to start making its own natural chemistry.......often up to a year is what I was told in my educational IOP group and by my Physc MD who specializes in addiction. Many addicts in recovery are prescribed antidepressants (for the depression) and non-narcotic sleep aides that are not addictive for this very reason. Hope this helps. If a sleep aide does not work for you,,,try things like exercise which will increase your serotonin naturally, warm baths, reading a good book before bed or warm milk......just whatever is pleasurable for you to help you relax.
God bless,
