As I was looking for a rehab for someone at the klinic I go to- I saw some disturbing claims-on the net and on late nite TV(those infomercials)
Always remember- although most are non-profit- - people are human, especially in a business (yes business) where people are desperate , and lots of $$$ in involved
Drug addiction treatment and drug rehab are big business in the United States. Its not without warrant: hundreds of thousands of Americans seek treatment for drug and alcohol addiction every year. However, there are some drug rehab programs that are not certified and are not above board in their practice, offering inflated promises and magic cures to a disease that has no cure.
One of the most widely talked about drug rehab scam is the rapid detox. Because the physical withdrawal symptoms associated with physical dependence upon a drug can be so intense, many are looking for a way to bypass those symptoms and kick as quickly as possible. Some drug rehab centers promise that you can be free from drug addiction in less than 24 hours with a rapid detox and flushing system that happens on the operating table. Others provide for a weeks recovery from drug addiction when you undergo their surgical treatment or quit according to their (very specific and obscure) plan.
The fact is, drug detox takes time in order to be both safe and effective. Anything rapid in nature puts you at risk and wont last long.- Of course there are a few cases of success, and these stories, although a 100 to one -are repeated again and again-
Any of you that have had success from these rehab mill$ - let me know Id like to hear about thier practices-
Also I see that there are a number of infomercials and drug rehab centers promising "freedom" from drug addiction through special diets, magic drinks, vitamin supplements or some combination thereof. Others offer philosophies and step-by-step regimens outlined in books and workbooks that are guaranteed to help you stop using drugs and alcohol
All of us- should know- there is NO guarantee when it comes to addiction-
Just a reminder to those new to this whole rehab thing,
jack
Thanks Jack,,,Bumpin ya up
as a retired md c/s 12 yrs from coke thru 12 step
I can tell you to be real careful about those programs like the WAismann method - rapid detox where they put you under anesthesia . CAN BE VERY VERY DANGEROUS.

Listen "Doc"- its not uncommon for people to ask to hear your story before they start opening up to someone-
You should know the behavior of heroin addicts or addicts in general- - not the most trusting people to begin with. So I think I speak for many , when I say we like to know about the poster a bit before we just trust them to give us advise
Dont forget this is the internet- you could be a doctor or an Indian chief- no-one would know the difference
As for calling me names like "smartazz"- that certainly shows a lack of respect and a boatload of arrogance-
Im not hear to argue or debate you- I dont have the time or energy- so I opt to ignore

Well jackofhartzz and any others - if want to see some of my story it is in weight gain and methadone thread.
Aside from the nonsense and back to Jack's original post...I do know of one person who did the rapid detox..said it was horrible and a complete waste of money. Almost killed him.
I like the tv ads with the son and father...the son was the addict. They have this beautiful facility on the beach in CA. They say that they can "Cure" you. That's the first red flag..there is no cure. It looks expensive as hell and nothing more than a health club..I would love to go there just to get some rest! It is not 12 step based.
At the end of the ad, a woman and man are running in slow motion down the beach..her hair is flying behind her and the man is looking at her adoringly as he jumps through the waves...
Good Lord.

YEAH I LOVE THAT ONE TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! F....KING PREDATORS THEY DISGUST ME!!!
That program in malibu, ca PASSAGES - is very very very very expensive PROGRAM
They use holistic approaches. BUT IT is not 12 step.
AND THEY CLAIM CURE - WHICH WE ADDICTS KNOW IS BULLs***.
While there is excellent treatment for addiction - because it is a spiritual disease, a spiritual treatment is indicated. We can never fully recover. I AM STILL AND WILL ALWAYS BE AN ADDICT.

Hey guys, I am new here and sooo appreciate the information. Have been visiting this site for a while but only joined today.
Although I have been sober for almost a year I am just now starting to feel like I am able to share my experiences with others outside of my meetings and sponsor.
Listening to the advice of others has helped fill the empty spaces with positive reinforcement . Thank you to everyone that takes their time to help their fellow addicts.
I did want to say that i totally agree with the comments on being caeful in choosing an in patient facility. I have been in 5 different treatment centers in 6 years. Something that I am not proud to say.
What I am proud to say is that finding a rehab that was 12 step based and that followed the principals of the program I was able to get sober.
I get a terrible feeling in my stomach when i see the commercials that promise a cure for addiction or make promises of feeling new or normal in 48 hrs after a raped detox.
I feel sick because a year ago I was contemplating those programs. I was miserable and wanting nothing more than to feel relief from my disease.
I trily believe in my heart that had i gone any where else I would be using today. The twelve steps saved my life.
i know that I have a disease of the mind that has no cure. I know that it can be treated .
i feel sorry for the suffering addicts searching for an answer that fall for the promises of a quick treatment.
i have been told that slow and easy does it and to take one day at a time.
In 7 years the advice from the 12 step program is the only thing thats worked.
*** This is my experience and what worked for me. May not be for everyone***

You are right and thanks for sharing
We stay sober and clean 1 day at a time and keep coming back.
We surrender our ego to the God of our understanding and let HIM run the show.
In the beginning it is often the sponsor whose sobriety we want, that is the sponsor is the temporary higher power, until we find the God of our understanding and surrender to him.
One guy I know made the doorknob to the entrance - his higher power, one lady made it her Oak tree in her yard. This is natural - until later we transition and find the God of our understanding.
Its all about acceptance and tolerance for ourselves and others
GOOD LUCK TO YOU and HUGS
