If you haven't taken any yet (because you said you were afraid too) you don't need them. Take some motrin and flush the vics. If you truly need them, next time ask the dr for a small amount, like 5. That way, you take them as needed and don't take more. Also, did you tell your dr you're in addict? He might have prescribed accordingly if he knew.
My rule of thumb has been, if I'm in that much pain, I better be in the hospital.
Only you know how bad your pain is but you have to really question your motives. My "knower" is broken, so I depend on others to do it for me. But honestly, if you haven't taken them yet, you really don't need them. Flush em.
Take care and I hope you feel better fast.

Hey Gina! Your sign in name says it all!! Slave for 6 years!!! Don't make it 7 or 8....if I had 10 or 100 Vicodin in my house...trust me...I would eventually have some legit reason for eating them....oh the pain that would start coming on!
I had a killer and I mean killer headache last night...in my previous life I wouldn't even of hesitated at popping 4 or 5 percs....well I took 2 Tylenol extra strength and slept like a baby headache free!!!
Flush them...your and addict for 6 years....try some other methods of pain relief...my addiction doctor tells me that opiates make pain worse after a while..I believe him...you are on a slippery slope.
I am so sorry you are hurting...but it is your addict brain telling you to keep those pills around. I don't see why someone could live with someone else that didn't really support your disease. You are not a bad person....just a person with a sickness. You are no better or worse than anyone else that is sick and in need of help!
Wishing you to get better soon!

Lisa,
I also use that rule of thumb. If the pain is so bad I better get myself to a hospital because something serous is going on.
I self medicated for 5 years. I took pills if my hair hurt (lol). A large part of my recovery has been to understand that you don't have to take a pill every time your hurting.
Slave,
I understand that you have a painfull medical condition now. It's ok to get pain relief when you really need it. You are in control, you know the right thing to do.

Slave - it sounds like your doctor was being totally negligent in prescribing 100 pills to you before he even knew what the problem was. You still dont know, correct? First off he handed you an addicting amount of pills. I have never heard of anyone being prescribed that amount to START with. Second, by taking them you could masking the pain without even finding out what the cause is. It could actually be something pretty serious but you wouldnt know. If the source of the pain is a concern to you, find a different doctor. If the pills are a trigger for your addiction (which they have to be) make sure they are never in your possesion.

While I agree wholeheartedly that giving out a 100 Vicodin for something where the source of the pain has not been specifically diagnosed is reckless, perhaps even negligent (sounds a bit...pill milly), there is another side in the drug dance and the "dance partner" is not following very..uh...safe steps.
If I am reading this correctly, the patient has not told the doctor about their addiction. While the doctor should NOT prescribe pell mell, its up to the PATIENT, not doctor interrogation, to tell the doctor about their addiction problems. Especially one as newly sober as that....
I can understand the fear that they won't be prescribed pain meds again, but if the situation truly warranted it, most physicians would prescribe on a LIMITED basis. 100 is scary (but to ACCEPT the 100 is even more scary), but for an addict, even the more reasonable 20 could be a problem. Not to tell the doctor is...as I have said....a reservation. Holding back on doing all possible to aid the recovery. For those "just in cases", which may have to do with more than just physical pain. After all opiate addicts have a tool in their arsenal that alcoholics don't have. They have ways of access restriction that the drunks can only do if they live on the top of Mount Everest...
To not use that tool (stop gap, but some good "training wheels" for the newly recoverying) is a .....waste.......
Hey, I have physical on Friday, I am going to see if they have that opiate addict stuff stamped in red....red, I like that.

Hey Gina:
I just logged on and saw your thread. Flush em girl! Remember detox? Remember the nightmare we both went through trying to get that crap out of our system???
I know something is going on with your body...I know it, but if it gets so bad, go to the ER, and make them give you anything but hydrocodone or oxycodone. Really, I believe that if I ever had legit pain that required meds, I would ask for a codeine type medication as that one never worked for me in the being "high" game...it just made me sleep.
Please, please, please...flush those pills. If you save even one of them out, you will find a reason to take it. It is just TOO MUCH temptation to have access. Listen, I know you have 5 and a half months...and that is fantastic, really!...but Gina, our minds are going to try to trick us into thinking we have this thing beat. WE DO NOT...we never will.
Remember the agony of detox...if you cannot remember yours, remember mine...hell, I know I whined about it enough, surely you can remember that.
Don't go back Gina. Back is against the laws of nature, keep moving forward, keep moving towards peace, keep moving towards clarity.
Babe, tell you Dr. at least. He cannot say anything to anyone, he is bound by an oath. Don't let yourself be put in this situation again. If you ever have to have meds in the future, have a plan in place BEFORE you get the script.
Please flush those pills. You have no idea how empowering it will be for you. It is an AWESOME gift to give yourself!
I am praying for you Gina. For your courage and your pain...and I love you, no matter what.
Sarah

Bumping up for Gina...wanted to make sure she saw Sarah's post. You rock Sarah.
I was so affraid to take a painpill even tho I was in tremendous pain because of my prior addiction. I was letting myself suffer with the pain. Only after going to Urgent Care did i take one.
I think it is a great thing to think that we can be stronger than pain and "throw them out."
However, if you are in pain, real pain, then you shouldn't be a martyr. I had a tooth pulled and let me tell you, if someone had taken the meds that day, I would have shot them.
the second day, however, I was greatful a friend helped me to throw them away.
I also agree that maybe not everyone is in the place to tell spouse of their addiction. sounds ideal, but then again, we all don't have ideal situations.
I think that it is important to tell doctors that you are in recovery; but remember what happened to charmed? She came home from an excruciating surgery without proper pain relief...the thought of that scares me.
I don't know what the answer is for you, slave, but coming here and writing about it shows your committment. I hope you feel better.

Slave-Hi! I don't think the dillema here is about taking a needed pain medication for legitimate pain. That is exactly what they are for.If you had to go to the ER last night because you were in pain,it's obvious it hurts.
I don't think any rational person is suggesting you suffer and just bite on a rag until the pain passes.
Here is the problem and please keep an open mind.I'm not trying to beat you up or make you feel guilty.I just want you to understand how easy it would be to relapse with this senario.
1.You have in your possession 100 Vicodin.
2.Your husband doesn't know you are an addict and you want him to hold your pills. He doesn't understand why you want him to?
3.You haven't told the doctor who gave you the Vicodin that you are an addict.
4.What did they say about the pain at the ER? How did they want to treat it?
Is there any way you can see how dangerous this is?
Is this the same doctor that prescribed you narcotics before?
If you are honest with your Doctor,I'm sure he would still treat the pain but I bet he wouldn't give you a 100 pills. He might even try some non-narcotic routes.Who knows? Give him a chance.
My only concern is that you can keep that 51/2 months. You can take pain meds without relapsing but all these parameters need to be in place to keep you honest.
Good Luck
