Hi everyone, I came across this sight by accident! but have found it really helpful. I have had Crohns Disease for the last 12 years and have been taking Co-codamal for the last 8 years everyday at about 14 a day, if i dont take them about every 2 1/2 hours i get a headache and feel tired etc, and have just considered the fact that I may be addicted as it had become a way of life I had not considered the possibility before.
Hi Rie I'm mollyjean I also have Chrons and I was /am addictrd to ultram I don't know what that is your taking can I have some info on it????mj
Hi there it sounds very much like you are addcited hun go back to your GP is my suggestion if possible. co.coldamol are very unlike solpidiene with similar effects jackie xxxx
Hi Mollyjean, Co-codamol is a mixture of paracetamol and codeine, I was first given it when I started having stomach cramps and the symptoms of crohns. it did ease it when used with the steroids. but I had an Ileostomy in 1995 and eventually came off steroids but the dr told me to stay on co-codamol, that was 8 years ago, if I dont take them I feel so ill and can not function properly. I get a headache and cramps, go hot and cold etc then it only calms down when I take them.
I am going to make an appointment to see my doctor, he is usually really good (although Dr's in england are usually writing the presciptions before you tell them whats wrong!). He prescribes me 100 per month but I end up buying them over the counter when I run out which is usually a few days after I get them. I suppose I just felt that after being so ill with Crohns that anything that helped me be normal, work and look after my 2 children was ok but its not, Im only 34 and dont want to be dependant on the tablets for the rest of my life. I will let you know how I get on
ria,Hey & good morning. My MD put me on ultram for the pain of Chrons. After 3 years & alot of heartache I am free of that.I was taking close to470 pills a month.I think talking to your MD is thr best way to go.Keep me posted on what happens...mj
Hi there i was a solpidiene addict for 20 years hun so i know what your going through ive spoken to many on your pills, im in the UK also if i can help you with anything let me know. It might be of benifit for you to visit the solpidiene site jackie xxxxx
Hi Raismilar
I am sorry to here of your predicament. I think you are doing the right thing seeing your GP be sure to be honest with him and also ask to have a liver function test. If you are taking 14 tablets a day that equates to 7 grammes of Paracetemol (Aceteminophen or Tylenol US name) thats a lot, I would be as concerned about that as the codeine. What strength are you getting form the Dr, I know over the counter you can only get 8 or 12.5mg of codeine.
You mentioned bad headaches, well.....there is a thing called chronic headache syndrome which is caused by taking too many headache pills. I know that sounds like a paradox but is true. If you do decide to get of the pills you will need the support of your Dr, freinds and family and manybe a recovery program. The habbit of pill abuse can be very deceitful and may confound you if you are not prepared. I am glad you are here and like many others here offer my support. I too am in the UK and have had problems with Codeine amungst other things.

hi riasmiler, i know how you feel i'm in the same boat as you, but it's not cocodamol i'm hooked on it's dihydrocodiene. I also suffer headaches, severe stomach cramps, unable to control my tempreture unless a take at least 10 a day!!!!! Tommo.
Hi Wackyjacky & MJ, I have spoken to my husband and he said he can also see that I am addicted. He said he would support me through whatever, which is good to know but he said he felt that I sould know that as he has been through so much with me over the last 12 years! and he is also glad I found this site as there are people going through or have gone through the same as me. I will keep you posted thanks x
Neon, you sound like you have been through alot, but hopefully you are doing ok now. Thank you for offering your support, I am going to arrange to see my GP, the headaches are so annoying and its horrible knowing that if I am late taking tablets or if I run out I can be out of action for a few hours at a time. I will keep you posted. Thanks R
Hi Tommo, I know the headaches and stomach cramps are awful, as I said to Neon I dread running out of tablets because I know what effect it has on me and its more so a problem as I work fulltime and cant always get to the chemist to buy some more the Dr will only prescribe me 100 per month and I take them within the first 3 days!!! Ria
Hi im so pleased your hubby is behind you hun support from family members is crucial if your going to quit. I was in the same catch 22 as you are right now scared to stop because i was so worried how i would funtion, at my height i was taking up tp 30 a day its taken me ages ot relise i dont need them. yes the w/d are going to be a bit of a nightmere especially with headaches but your in the ill pill syndrome hun so you have to stop this merry go round. Im now 6 months solpidiene free. it can be done you just have to talk with your GP for your best option he will know of any medical history that my stop you from doing things either too fast or too slow etc. i want to wish you all the luck inthe world hun im here if you need me jackie xxx

Hi Jackie
I am mighty fine, thanks for asking. Work is a tough one I hit the floor running so I did not have time to wallow in my anxieties about going back. It sure helps me to take stock when I see the sorry state of some of my patients are in. It makes me think problems!, I aint got any problems compared to these poor souls.
Take care
