Hi, im new to the forums....
Im about to embark on the umtienth withdrawal episode... if been taking codeine at 200-240mg per day for nearly 3 years, even though im not even 20 years old..... im going to die soon if i dont.... i really suffer from depression, and use to take prozac, but stopped because it interracted with my codeine (which i obviously preffered).
Everytime i have tried to quit, i have experienced extreme stomach cramps, runny stomach and migraine. I also get really bad depression, and im forced to lie in bed all day, which i could never really afford to do because of work, and thus ended up using pills all over again...
I was wondering if anyone here has had any success using Prozac as anti-depressant during codeine withdrawal? I know the drugs dont interact well, but i do intend to stop by tapering off the dose for a couple of days, and then start taking counter messures, such as non-narcotic painkiller, anti-naussea, muscle relaxants for cramps, etc. Would it be better to give the withdrawal 2 or 3 days before starting the prozac?
Im a doctor's child, and getting any information, or letting them find out about my addiction would ruine all chances to quite.... our relationship is partly to blame for my initial addiction....
thanks in advance.
Dear Herenow,
Well, I certainly can relate to where you are, but I don't think an anti-depressant will have any real effect on the physical w/d symptoms that you're worried about. But these are questions better asked of a doctor, preferably the one who would prescribe the med.
Since you have been battling the codeine addiction for some time, maybe further self-medication is not the answer? Are you 18? There are doctors other than your father who you could go to, in confidence, to develop a plan to get off the codeine and treat the mental addiction longterm. It can be such a relief -- and a positive step -- to ask for help and give over the reins to someone else for a while. You sound very brave, but we've all had to seek help and direction. And we've all had to eventually accept that we could no longer self-medicate our way out of addiction. Please keep posting and letting us know how you're doing. I'm sure there is a lot of experience on this Board that could be of benefit to you in your courageous quest to get and stay clean. Peace, M.

I'm not sure about prozac for withdrawals, but I did get off of zoloft in 2003 because it prevented the euphoria feeling I got from the hydrocodone (and back then I was convinced that the Norco was a much better antidepressant)
The big thing about withdrawal is the depression, so an antidepressant would probably help with that.
Good luck
