I hope you can help me out, I have a client who has been on Methadone for fifteen years, he has come down to 30mls a day over the last month, he was feeling really ill when I saw him and is going to come off of the last thirty mls in the next month, I advised him to slow down the tapering but he is determined to get off of it. Should I just keep quiet? I don't want him to fail.
Please, any advice you can give will be welcomed.
Karen
Hi Karen
I spent all of 2006 tapering off methadone, from 95mls to 30mls and in Dec switched to Subutex. I will take just as long to taper from the Sub, longer if needed. After 32 years of addiction this is the best I've ever done. I was also very eager to get off everything as quick as possible, but this time I listen to my k/worker who kept telling me not to rush things. I think because we have this horrible addiction we try to quick fix it.
I do believe meth is not to be taken lightly and a slow taper would be best, for me it gave me the time to sort a lot of issues out, re-housing, staying away from other users, learning to live in the real world. Remember coming off in only the first step, staying off is the next.
I haven't been on this board long but it has helped me a lot, I read a saying on here that said "Rome wasn't built in a day, neither was your habit". So please talk to him maybe ask why the rush. I hope all goes well for them.

The slower you come off the better. The whole purpose for the Meth, is to keep you from craving dope while you teach yourself how to live life on life's terms. If your friend is clean and has changed the people, places and things to more positive drug free alternatives. If there strong and doing the right things, any one can handle being uncomfortable for a week or so. None of us can do this by our self's. So the long and short of it is. Go slow if you can. But quick is O.K. as long as you got a good support system and no longer hang with those people, go to those places, or do those things. Hope this helps.
Go with God!
Go with God!
Thanks for the advice, I will try not to nag him, but I don't want him to fail at trying to quit.
Fingers crossed.
