I'm a 30 y.o. mom who is thinking of coming off methadone. I have been going to a "government clinic" for 3 years now and i wanna be clean from it all! I am at 33 mg a day. I talked from 65 to 22 and then had to go back up because of withdrawals. Anyways, all I've heard are horrible stories of methadone tapering and how it's the most painful and almost impossible and very prepared to go thru withdrawals from months and months. I've read the previous post on this feed and there are alot of positive experiences. I already struggled with RLS before even getting on methadone. I don't have a doc to write a script of clonidine or anything i think may help (no insurance) so I'm just going to be tapering down from the "clinic". I haven't started the detox yet because I'm so scared. But I'm tired of having someone else (counselors/nurses at clinic), basically having me "by the balls". I wanna be clean from this. But I'm so scared of the pain and withdrawals. ANY advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

This is what Narcotics Anonymous suggests in their HOW IT WORKS:

AA says: http://www.aa.org/assets/en_US/p-10..._howitworks.pdf
For the majority of alcoholics/addicts that I know at the meetings (me included) is that getting clean/sober was bad and staying clean/sober was impossible without commitment to the program.
I had/have a 5% drinking/using problem and a 95% thinking problem.
The folks at your local NA/AA meetings will be able to help you. They help millions.
All the best.

Hi Heather- welcome - you will get alot of support here as well as going to meetings - i never had a problem with RL's but alot of people use a hot bath with epsom salts - seems to work - hope it helps - wish you the best of luck - stay strong - you can do this -
Heather,
Welcome, and you are in the right place. Since the methadone board was added in 2011, there has been a fantastic variety of people come here and write about their experiences with one thing in mind, for most, to help someone else in the same situation.
If you haven't already, please read the entries about detoxing from methadone. One board started a couple years ago by StrongWoman, "Has anyone successfully detoxed off methadone " is the one that got the ball rolling and there is a lot of information there to guide you. No one knows you, like you know yourself, so it's up to you to figure out what will work for you.
In my experience being on methadone, never detoxing, but knowing people who have tried it with some failing and some succeeding, is that it needs to be done slowly. Please talk to your clinic counselor and clinic doctor about your wish to detox and go from there.
Good luck and please come back, document your story for others, and look for advice from those who have been there.
