My brother is 50 yrs old and has been drinking heavily since I can remember. His choice of drink is tequila. I call it "to kill ya. " He recently began to bleed from every open area of his body. He would even just scratch his skin and it takes forever to stop bleeding. I think it is his liver failing and he won't go to the doctor because he isn't working and don't have insurance. He still defends himself and says he doesn't drink that much. We all knoiw what that means. Has this happened to anyone or does anyone know if this could be related to his chronic alcoholism?
Thanks, Dawn
Hi Dawn,
I'm no doctor, firstly. Most of my knowledge is experience-based. Chronic alcoholism certainly causes liver problems, but it also can cause ulcerative colitis, esphogeal cancer, and numerous other health issues. Bleeding from the stomach, throat, and abdomen can come from severe alcohol abuse because, over time, the blood vessels weaken to the point of bursting. It can happen long before alcoholic cirrosis, too.
Alcoholism is a disease of denial. Consider getting him into a hospital and being honest with the provider. Alcoholism DOES kill.
Again, I'm no doctor, but I've hidden PLENTY of alcoholic symptoms from loved ones so that I could continue to drink. In my alcoholic mind, drinking wasn't the problem--it was everyone else deciding they knew what was best for me. Addictions are cunning, baffling, and, more often than not, deadly.

Hi Dawn...
I never suffered from these symptoms but I do know 3 people that have experienced those exact symptoms while in active alcoholism, 2 that I am very close to and attend meetings with weekly...luckily, that's when they reached their bottom & came to the rooms...now they have quite a few 24hrs under their belts....
Would he consider going to a meeting with you?
Take care,
Stacey

Thank you both for responding.
This is the brother that partied with me up until 1993 when I decided to get some help. I started going to meetings and he decided I had the problem and kept on drinking and drugging. I don't know if he is still doing drugs but I do know every time I see him or alk to my mom, he is always drunk.
I even went to an AA meeting and bought him a BIG BOOK. That was 3 years ago and it is still sitting at my mom's. He won't even take it to read it.
Yep, we are the ones with the problem. Not him.
I even tried going to chicago to take him to a meeting and the day I went to get him, his drunk girlfriend said he wasn't there. My gut was telling me he was there.
He doesn't seem to be afraid of talking about his symptoms. He tries to make a joke outta it. There is blood in his urine, stool, spit. His nose will start bleeding at any time. Just scarey. But it isn't due from his drinking because he doesn't drink that much. So he says.
I even hate going to my mom's on holidays because he is there and it always end up in a brawl with my other brothers and sister who pretty much has alienated him. It is just so sad.
Once my mom dies, I think that will be it with my brother, if he doesn;t die first.
You all have a great day. and thank you again.
