hi, I've been taking dihydrocodiene now for nearly 9 yrs, can't stop takin them as i feel seriously ill. Started taking them for severe back pain in 95, had spinal surgery 3yrs ago but felt the need to carry on takin them although i wasn't in any pain. Really need help as it's wrecking my marriage, and relationship with my children. Paul.

Addiction wreaks your life hun at least yoru now being smart enough to get help have you tried your Drs? or meetings ? jackie xx
lol just read your other post yep but you know i sort of agree with him but they neglect to give us help they seem to think its so easy ummmm i would like to knwo how many Drs are taking their own pills etc OOh boy lots jackie xx
Hi Tommo,

A lot of people who come to this Board got hooked just like you did -- taking the pain pills for legitimate pain, liked the way it made them feel, kept on using them. Then the physical tolerance builds and you have to take more and more to achieve even a fraction of the same effect. It's a dead end street. I reached the end about 8 months ago. Like you, I wasn't functioning well in my marriage, work, anywhere. But I was scared to quit and didn't know what to expect.

To give you advice or share relevant experiences, it would help to know how much you're taking on a daily basis and for how long (daily), also whether you live in the U.S., Canada, or elsewhere.

You're not alone with this. Keep posting and I'm sure you'll get the information you need. All I can say is that as bad as my life was, it is remarkably better today...in every area. I didn't know just how much my addiction was destroying my ability to enjoy life naturally, until I stopped.
Good morning none hows you hun/ jackie xx

Ok Tommo, I'm in the US so I'm not as familiar with the kinds of addiction services available in the UK. But others on this Board would be.

If you feel sick when you stop taking them, then you're probably physically dependent on them as well as mentally dependent. Is there a physician or chemical dependency specialist whom you could make an appointment with to discuss -- in absolute confidence -- your treatment options? Some people just quit and go cold turkey, endure the physical withdrawals, and then follow a plan to treat the mental addiction going forward. Others try to taper down to a lower amount before going c/t. And others detox under medical supervision and care -- probably the method that you will hear recommended most often since none of us are doctors and no one can predict exactly how your body will react to withdrawal.

You're on the right track for sure. Just reaching out for help here is an important step. You'll find your answers, and life will get better. It has for me.
