Wanted to do a poll but don't see an option for that so I'll just ask.
Anyone who has applied for social security disability insurance in the U.S., please respond if you can:
When you applied, did you use an attorney? How much did that cost?
Did you win & are you now getting payments?
When you applied, did you NOT use an attorney? Were you rejected? Accepted? Did you apply again if you were not accepted? Were you accepted the 2nd time?
If you don't mind my asking and you are getting payments, what are your reasons for getting ss disability? (what diseases or conditions)
Any information you can provide me would be great. Thanks.
Hi HB! My sister applied and received SS disability. She has bipolar disorder and then sustained a head injury that left her with a bad back and tbi (traumatic brain injury). A social worker was assigned to her to be her case manager and she helped her fill out the paperwork. This process had been expidited because my sistr's level of function had really deteriorated physcially and of course mentally. If you go through social services you won't have to pay a lawyer..but my sister's case was pretty cut and dry.
It can be a long process. You have to file in the county that you live in and there is a lot of paperwork but worth it in the end.
Hope this helped a tad.

it is very common to be denied the first and even second time you apply. i know a few people who finally got it on the third attempt. two of those people did get lawyers, the third did not.
I tried, but got denied. I'm going to try again, but this time around with the help of a lawyer(in my parents expense). I'm doing it for my bi-polar and Hep-C.
LAC,
I never did but my friend did...............no attorney............they have Hep C and are bi-polar...............I think they just did it for the Hep C........denied.
I think it was just the one time.............I'll ask for you.

Someone I new from the streets told me their story in passing about a year ago:
Ginger got SSI without a lawyer. Although she has an illness she also had mental health issues which took top honors over the illness. Her case was handled pro-bono because the place she was recieving aid from put her in contact with an agency that handled matter's like her's involving fresh lawyers just getting their feet wet. She had been trying to get it and had been turned down 2xs (If I remember correctly) never filing an appeal. The streets had her gripped but once she got clean she got dam serious about helping herself and knocked down every door she could till the day help came calling......hope that helps.

I recently filed for bipolar and chronic pain and have been denied, I plan on refiling soon. An attorney can only charge a maximum of $5,300 out of any monies that are received from your settlement. I don't think they can charge if your case is denied. I am not retaining an attorney, at least not until I've been denied for 3 tries.
WHEN I WAS TRYING TO GET MY SSI AND DISABILITY I HAD BROKE MY BACK AND HAD ALREADY HAD 3 BACK SURGERIES AND MY ORTHPEDIC DR. WAS THE SSI DR. SIGNED ME UP , I WAS DENIED 3 TIMES WELL IN THE MEANTIME IN THE LAKE CHARLES AMERICAN PRESS IN LAKE CHARLES , LOUISIANA. THEY HAD AN ARTICLE SAYING IF YOU HAD ANY OF THE FOLLOWING YOU WILL BE QUALIFIED IN 6 WEEKS.
DRUG, ACLOHOL, HIV, HEP C/D/E/H {YES THEY OR FOR REAL} I CHECKED} OR IF YOU WERE A {HOMOSEXUAL} BECAUSE BEING GAY IS A MENTAL ILLNESS
I CLEARED THE TABLE ON MY WORKER WITH THE NEWS PAPER I GOT MINE THEN IN ABOUT 3 DAYS AFTER FIGHTING WITH THEM FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS.

Jack, that's why I asked for a link to the article, being a LA girl I don't think this person has their head screwed on quite tight enough. She seems to know everything about everything. I'm sure that if this article was true there would have been a spitload of hoopla about it. Besides I thought I could get disability for one of the above reasons LOL
Jack,Janet i read that line bout 4.30am this morning before going to work.....again the blatent wrongness of it stayed with me all day....weird and wrong..........take it eze.............Davey
Not only that, but if someone can't get disability with a broken back, there is definately a problem.
Seems 3 is the magic number, 3 surgeries, 3 denies, approved in 3 days.
Been sober for 30 years.
Cottoncandy if you could post a link to this list of disabilities that would be great. I hardly think being gay is considered a mental illness, like Janet said it would have caused an uproar in gay communities across the states. Nor should it be considered a mental illness, this is just ignorance.
I would like to know how being a drug addict qualifies for disability? And an alcoholic for that matter.
