Sometimes the old rn kicks in and I am deeply disturbed by the things I read on this site. I try to stay out of it but when people are possibly putting info. out there that could be fatal I must try to step in and share what I know to be true.
Dilaudid is Hydromorphine Hydrochloride. It is extrememly strong and not written for very often. It is not something you can just get online. When injested it peaks within 1/2 to 1hr. The normal dose is 2-4mg every 4 hrs. Even if taking the liquid form of 10mg every 4-6 hrs precautions must be taken because overdose can be deadly. This drug is very strong. It can cause resp. arrest, resp. depression, hypoxia, cardiac arrest.
Someone wrote that they were taking 30 pills/day at her maximum dose 240mg/day) and 20 - 8mg tablets/day (160mg) which were prescribed by her physician. I have never heard of such a large dose being prescribed even in my cancer patients. If you think that 4mg every 4 hrs would be the max dose recommended that would equal 6 tablets or 24mg. / day. Even if it were 8 mg every 4 hrs. That would equal 48mg./24 hrs. That is alot of Dilaudid. And this person is saying she takes 240mg/day!
My point is that if you are new and trying to get off this at home you need to be careful and contact your physician before stopping. This is a huge dose of meds. to be taking and tapering from.
It just seems a bit dangerous not to mention this here on "this" site where others are watching. If you are new and tapering please be sure you are fully aware of what you are embarking upon by a medical licensed person before you take a plunge like this. Do not rely on anyone here to give you all the info. you need to taper off meds like this and do not ever try this big of a dose for yourself if you are not clean! I would hate to see someone either try to take a dose like this thinking they aren't taking much and end up dead or have problems coming off. Be safe.
Your sobriety is worth it. Please keep working to get clean. This is not a drug to be taken lightly. It is very dangerous and kills.
Thanks,
pm
Amy,
Thanks so much for starting this thread. I find the information being stated by another poster quite dangerous and wrong. I would hate for someone to lose their life over such information posted here. Dilaudid is a very strong narcotic, one of the strongest.
Just for example: The poster stated that she is prescribed 20 of the 8mg Dilaudid tabs per day and that at her max she took up to 30 pills/day of the 8mg tabs and comparing it to other drugs such as Morphine .........
8mg of Dilaudid=32mg of Morphine
160mg of Dilaudid (which is 20 of the 8mg pills) =640mg of Morphine
160 mg of Dilaudid = 426.67mg of Methadone
8mg of Dilaudid =320mg of Mepheridine (Demerol)
160mg of Dilaudid = 6400mg of Mepheridine (Demerol)
As one can see this would be deadly doses of this medication. No one would be able to take this amount of Dilaudid nor could they withdraw from it at home. Respiratory depression is the most common S/E of Dilaudid and a person could stop breathing from just a small dose such as is prescribed for severe pain such as Cancer.
Thank You Amy for calling attention to this. Love,
Sharon

FYI........anyone can check the information out that I stated above on Dilaudid. Just google the medication and find out for yourself. An MD ordering a patient 20 Dilaudid 8mg tabs per day would not keep his lisence for long, not even a pain specialist.

Thanks Sharon,
I was thinking this exact same thing and feeling mortified like what if someone not clean wanted to up their dose, etc. Sometimes there needs to be clarity on these meds. given because we are losing our loved ones to this type thing everyday.
Thanks for posting the comparisons. That sheds more light on what we are trying to say. This is one of the most dangerous meds. a person can od from.
Thanks,

This is an excellent topic. Most importantly, NOBODY should EVER rely on medical information posted on this site. It could prove to be deadly. Additionally, each person's body responds differently to medication. "Miss Q" could be browsing this site, unclean, thinking she is about to OD on xxmg. of ??? per day, but is no longer feeling high from it. "Miss Q" reads about "Mr. Z" who has been taking xx mg. of ??? per day. Suddenly her addict mind tells her that if "Mr. Z" can tolerate this amount, then so can she, and it will not hurt her to up her usage to xxx mg. WRONG!!!!
If you are "Miss Q" browsing this site, heed this warning! What is good for the goose is NOT good for the gander. DO NOT allow your addict mind to tell you otherwise!! You could end up hospitalized or dead. I found this site on the day I began suboxone and have been clean ever since. My DOC was oxycotin and I believed that I was about to keel over from my high amount I was taking. This was part of my motivation to get clean. It is no fun to wake up each day wondering if you will OD today. I found people on this site who were taking double what I was taking. I did not know it was physically possible to do this without dying. What would my addict brain have done with this information, had I stumbled across it while I was still actively abusing this drug? Would I have been ignorant enough to believe that MY body could tolerate a much higher dose? Thank God I will never know the answer.
Another example: Yesterday a poster stated that he was taking 6 1000mg vicodins per day. He was erroneously stating the amount of acetaminophen he was ingesting (which is way too much, but that is posted on that thread.) Is it possible that ONE person out there might believe that they too could injest this amount? Maybe, maybe not, but the point is DO NOT RELY ON THE INFORMATION POSTED ON THIS SITE when it comes to the amount of drugs your body will be able to tolerate.
As for the dilaudid poster, I believe this could be a misunderstanding. I never read what she posted about how many milligrams she is tapering off of. I do know that she seems to be a kind and sincere person. It is difficult for me to believe she is lying. Maybe she is just confused about the milligrams in her pills? Or something of this sort? And honey, if you are reading this we support you no matter what the case may be. I do not know the full story and this post is certainly not meant to accuse you of anything. I know you are going thru a very difficult time right now and you are in my thoughts. Please keep posting whenever you can.

Atlas,
Exactly. You said it so much better than I could though.

Thanks Redd. I think this topic needs to kept at the top today. I must log off soon, but if you are around can you keep this bumped up? If not, somebody???

I would like to add something, or get an opinion from the Nurses on the board. I have seen many times where people are told to flush their pills. .
What concerns me, is if someone is talking a benzo, and an opiate, and they are told to flush the opiate, not knowing they can't flush the benzo, but assumes since the opiate can be flushed, so can the benzo. Not everyone knows that you must not go off cold turkey from benzos, I didn't until I read this board, was never on them (benzos) but that is beside the point.. We only go by what people tell us, are they being 100% honest about their usage? Not for us to second guess, we can only go on what is written. What scares me is, yes most people get off opiates cold turkey, with no problems, but to me, they should see a doctor to help with this in my opinion, whether or not they got the drug elsewhere. Blood pressure increase alone should be monitored. I know all situations are different.
I think someone said recently, we do not know their allergies if they have any, hell they may not know they have any, in terms of OTC, something I never even realized myself.
Maybe the OTC bump should be redone with a statement , see your doctor for any allergies to the medications listed. ??
Am I over reacting with my feelings on this subject?
I didn't know much about deludid until now, Thank you ladies for posting the information. Can always count on the Nurses.

Atlas,
I agree with the main point of your post. That is what both Amy and I found dangerous about the information being given out. As far as how much she was consuming of the Dilaudid, you can go back and read the amount she stated she was and is using. There is no misrepresentation on my part. Good for you to think that she is sincere but it raised alot of red flags for me. I find it hard to believe that any physician would prescribe 20 narcotic pills per day of any kind. No matter what amount she is taking, my only hope is that she is on the road to recovery. I only posted because I was concerned about new comers who may think its ok to take that amount of any narcotic period. This is life and death here and I don't want anyone to die from misinformation. Honesty about ones addiction is necessary for their recovery and this is an anonoymus board so why not be totally honest?
Once again I only posted out of concern on this issue. I think anyone trying to come off of any narcotic should check with their PCP before beginning to taper or go C/T.
Sincerely,
Sharon

Good point Brook, and no you're not over reacting...you just care.
Redd
Brooke,
You are exactly right. I think that no one on here should tell another person to go cold turkey or how to taper based on their own experience. A person coming off of any kind of medication should check with their private physician. We don't know a persons history and we cannot and should not tell someone.....hey flush them, I did it so it's OK. Makes me crazy when I see that.

Sharon,
I'm glad there are people here like you that know the facts on meds. I'm clueless as to what is what. I'm only familiar with my DOC.
This is a great thread.

I was thinking the same thing when I first read her post. That many prescriptions of Dilaudid coming from the same Dr. would trigger so many red flags. The pharmacist filling them would probably call the DEA themselves,But what can you do? This is a BB and how can you verify anything? Maybe they were getting them from different Drs. but even still 30 a day would mean you would be taking 2.5 every hour based on a 12 hour day.A Dr would have to write a script every week for 210 Dilaudids.Somethings not right about this story.I hope she gets clean because she sounds really determined. My doctor was fairly loose with the script pad but i would have to wait at least 2 weeks to get more oxy's.She just had me on 4 a day which she said was pushing it.
I agree. This is definately a "back to recovery" thread.
The warning that is being put out here is great, also the one on the OTC meds.
We don't know anything about anyone, just what they CHOOSE to share with us. Our best advice is to consult a physician.
Wonderful topic ladies! oops and Tim (sorry dude!)

BTW, how is little Jack? I saw his pic when I was reading last night and he is adorable. Our Jack is doing wonderful and is such a delight. Aren't babies wonderful, they make the whole world seem better.
Hope you are well also Redd. I think of you often.
Love,

Thank GOD kysharon, I was slammed before for saying this very same thing.
When I see it, I get this sick feeling inside regarding flushing pills. Then that person is stuck. I would rather see someone not flush and take until they can get to a doctor, than to flush who may be home with small kids, and no support around them and go through hell. I hope I don't get slammed for saying this. But it is how I feel, there is so much more than to just stopping.
Thank you ..

Kysharon, Your point is well taken. I do not believe you made any misrepresentations, only that I am not fully informed. I am so glad you posted this information and agree with you 100%. This is life and death we are dealing with, and certainly not a matter to be taken lightly. I just have to wonder if the dilaudid poster is confused. I too, am concerned about information posted here. Addicts can read something and take it as a green light to up their usage and this can be fatal. Thank you for adding to this thread. Your information might be saving a life.
I also agree that the OTC list needs to be re-written. Let's put all the warnings we can think of on it. This would be especially helpful if someone logs on for the first time, reads the list, and logs off. I am sure this happens.
I have to go to work in a few minutes. Please everyone, keep this thread at the top today. I am sure others will want to add to it, but if the board is slow keep this at the top.
Have a great day everyone! Atlas

Tim,
So glad that we agree on something, lol. Anyway I read her post where she said that she gets the Dilaudid from one Physician. I am not trying to knock this girl at all, I promise. Just worried the heck out of me because Dilaudid is such a potent drug and the potential danger to others reading what is being said.

I just want to say thank you for posting this because although i have not read this post that you are talking about until i saw this thread, i also know that dilaudid is a very dangerous and strong drug. Please, as the others have stated above... if you are tapering from heavy doses of narcs and esp any benzos see a dr before you do so... it can be deadly. Love and God Bless, Bri :)
Good idea Atlas, maybe the Nurses paste their posts on a new Topic titled ' something like --- For all newcomers to read - or Important information for all newcomers - or Life or Death Information for Newcomers. Too early to think of something effective.
Then but a statement at the bottom to keep it bumped?
