Does Anyone Know About Depo Provera?!

ive been on this for years, it is used as a contraceptive and also for medical complaints. i had an ovarian tumour when i was 16 so they put me on this as i cant take the pill, apparently i have too much eastrogen in my body. depo-provera only contains progestorone so i dont get a period at all. just one injection every 3 months and thats it. ive been thinking of coming off it, mainly because my mother has been saying alot of women have trouble even getting their periods back after taking the pill and to fall pregnant a few yrs down the line ect....it just got me thinking and a bit worried. my old gyno said it would "preserve" my fertility!! any comments.....
I have never ever heard of it "perserving your fertility". I'm not a doctor. I do know it can take up to a year to get your fertility back after coming off it. Some times longer. Some women shorter. 6-12mo. average. Remember if you come off it and you are not ready to become pregnant you need to use another method to be safe. Alot of women do not tolerate being on it so it is good you have been able to tolerate it and use it all these years. I think it's good to talk it through with your obgyn and then make an informed decision. If you don't get the answers you need go to another one til you know all the pros and cons. It's not something to take lightly. Have to consider what you want in terms of children, your age, your situation, alllllll those things.

good luck!

Also remember there are always going to be those rare instances where people are not able to get pregnant for "years". There is alot they can do these days. Don't let all that scare you too much. But get a good doc you like and can talk it over with to get a plan you both agree with.
Hello,For some reason i thought you was a guy.Because of your id.I guess u love elis.lol..My mom she loved him.My husband does also.Anyways,I have been of Depo for 10 years and have come off three times in the three years.I have gained alot of weight.I didnt the first six years but, it one of the side effects and .I came off to take the pill which i stayed sick. Then i would get upset about the weight gain come off try a different pill or been on the patch and couldnt afford the patch .I did loose my weight everytime i come off of the depo. it take about four to five months and i feel alot better off depo.It causes alot of hormone problems also i dont have the desire for sex at all..II know the pain pills effect your sex drive also, but mines been messed up way before addiction came along.I would perfer the patch its a great birth control.I had to find out alot about depo because of my mom and law was fussing and went the my appt. to ask or i tell them it wasnt good for me not to have a period. She was like a womans body has to be clean out .They gave her some information and told her the body will still naturly clean itself. Now for the part you was asking really i was told that it could be a problem haveing kids .Said when you come off and try to have another baby it might not happen or may not within years.I have a friend was on it for 3 years never missed her appt. She wanted to have another baby and got off depo. she got pregnant in 9 months period. So,it all depends on the person everyones body is different.I wish i had the money to get my tubes tied.I dont want anymore i love my girls and wouldnt trade them for nothing in the world.I want to be able to do and give all i can for them. Then, this promblem with my addiction is a battle its self well, you know what i mean.Hope this helps you with all you wanted to know.crystal

depo-answer to questions

Also, when i get 35 they have told me chances are i will not be able to receive depo- any longer.I also have osteoporosis ,depo-cause you to loose calcium from the bones and cause this.I didnt know this but,i says depo- shouldnt be used any longer then 2 years.Thier other website with more side effects such as hair loss.how long have you been on depo? Are you wanting to become pregnant ?crystal

thankyou pregnantmom and crystal. my sisters name is krystal, small world!
thanks for the info.....my mother also is saying its the reason i have put on some weight as it has built up over the years and she also believes the body should as u put it crystal have the chance to "clean out". so i think i have to find another gyno. i dont have one at the moment, ive just been getting my gp to give me the injection every 3 months. i have come off of it before and my period came back after a few months. but i will have to get to a gyno, and ill get a new one for a second opinion!!
thanks again and take care

p.s yeh i love elvis lol
Elvis,

My sister was on it for three years. She gained an obscene amount of weight and it also gave her headaches. When she came off of it, she didn't have a period for nine months. She was miserable. She did lose the weight, but she worked her tail off to do it. She has no desire to ever have children, so that wasn't a factor, but she wishes she had never gotten the depo shot.
