Hello. I knew that i was going to have a problem with alchohol addiction ever since I was 16. Since I have become legal age, it's only gotten worse. I am 25 now, and it doesnt seem to get any better. I have been trying to "cut down" and quit for about three years now. I have called AA and found out meeting times, only to chicken out on going when the time comes. Everytime I wake up with a hangover, I try and make some sort of promise to myself to resolve this, but then by the next day, I am ok and I deny that i need help. I usually drink heavily 1 or 2 times a week. I feel like it's hopeless, because everytime I make a promise to quit or cut down, I fail myself. I have tried limiting myself to 4 drinks a sitting. Somtimes this works and I am really proud of myself when it does, and other times I will go overboard and forget about my "4 drink rule". I dont know what to do. I am too scared to go to AA because i live in such a small town and dont want to run into anyone I know. It's too embarassing. Does anyone have any suggestions, or at least know what i am feeling?
You shouldn't feel embarrassed. I think you will be pleasently surprised after you go to a meeting. It IS anonymous. People there are attending for a common problem, most probably felt the same way you did the first time they went to a meeting.. You don't have to be an alcoholic to go, just have a desire to stop drinking. There are open meetings where anyone interested may attend.
