Effects On Pain

Im curious, are painkillers as effective on pain as they once were after you have been abusing them? Someone in my case for instance who once took 10 a day, sometimes 3 at a time. If I then needed pain relief, would the normal dosage of 2 every 4 hours do the trick on legit pain? How has that effected those here who truly had to have some type of pain relief after getting clean?
Donna they actually started making my pain worse. ... anytime i felt ANY pain, i'd take about 4 and chew them up...yea it got bad.

They did not help my back whatsoever after a little while...when I started abusing them real bad...
I was fooling myself.

Good Question. and thank you for all your sweet comments about me. I love ya!!!!!!

I have to agree with Stacy on this one. The pain pills made the pain worse. After I got all that crap out of my system I realized that although my pain was and still is bad but, the pills only made it worse.

I, myself, am curious about that "after effects" of pain pills. I've been told that your body knows right away that you had/have a high tolerance to the pill and therefore you're right where you left off.

I know what you mean about pain while taking the pain killers. But Im curious as to what happens later down the road when say you need surgery or intense dental work, whatever. Will the normal dosage they would give you be enough for the pain? Anyone?
Stacey - I love you too. I love the determination you have.
I've wondered the same thing Donna. All i know is...i have a cousin who has been on sub for over a year. She wsa into norcos and oxys real bad,she had alot of pain and had 2 dr prescribing her large amounts in the end.She ended up becoming addicted of course and eventually,on her own, went and sought out sub to help get her off the pain pills.

Just recently she was having an operation on her throat, they took her off the sub for a few days prior to the operation ,did the operation, then gave her the pain meds, and they worked fine. After a week or so...they stopped the pain meds, put her back on the sub.

Im just not aware of how much pain meds she was on,i imagine it was whateve the dr felt necessary, and it worked.I hope that helps answer the question a little bit, lol?~KIM
The efficacy of opiates on recovering opiate addicts will depend on several factors: 1) The length of time of recovery (since last opiate) 2) The extent of opiate addiction (both type of drug and dosages). and whether other drugs are involved.

Generally speaking, recovering opiate addicts will develop tolerances to opiates again much faster than non-addicts (typical of all physically habituating drugs--true of alcohol for alcoholics too).

The bottom line is that opiates "stop working" sooner in recovering opiate addicts than non-addicts and doses may have to be raised sooner. Yet another danger of using opiate pain control in recovering opiate addicts.........
I had a tooth pulled after a while of being clean. The meds hardly worked; it was like that monster amount was needed for relief.

I was looking into surgery, and the doctor told me(she knew of the past) that liquid morphine would probably have to be used in my case. She said that opiate addicts not only have a lower pain threshold, but also a much higher tolerance. I didn't do the surgery.

Hope that helped.
I was perscribed oxycodone and oxycontin for my herniated discs back in I think 1999. In the beginning they worked for the pain and I was taking the perscribed amount. Before being perscribed them I never knew what it felt like to be high so I didn't immediately realize what was going on. After awhile I started noticing how good they made me feel and before you know it I was eating them like they were candy. I probably had 5 doctors at one time perscribing them to me. I forgot all about the pain because I was to busy chasing the high. Now that I have been off the pills for almost a year I do have pain and do have the option of surgery but I choose not to go that route. I have went back to taking advil and doing my exercises that I learned in p.t. I feel after a year being off the pills if I had to go back on them I think in the beginning they would help with the pain but I think it would be more of a mind game for me as I would again not think about the pain only about getting high. I was taking 41/2 5mg percocets at one time. Breaking each one up for added effect. But my pain in my back didn't go away, it got worse, and I only got high.
Donna what ELIM wrote IMO is 100%

I asked my First sub doctor As I was facing surgery. She said to me the drugs would help but she basically said the suboxone and a few days of suffereing And I would be fine.

It was a polyp removed from throat. She was correct. I went the sub route.

Although Opiates are not my DOC oxycontin scared me enough., She implied you may get cravings?? WTF did I know? I listend to my doctor.

Take care Donna--Jeff

P.S Donna If I need a hip replacement hypothetically the morphine will work just fine as per the sub doctor.

I am a walking operation so i used to worry if opites would work if needed. I was assured YES
