I know that some of you are on antidepressants.......I have been looking into one that may help with anxiety.......I was wondering if any of you could tell me who take one if you got any relief if you have anxiety issues.....
I heard good things about wellbutrin but more from a mood standpoint not anxiety......effexor I heard does help with anxiety.......Whatever feeback anyone can give me I would appreciate it even if it is on a different drug.......the bad as well as the good.....
Love to all,
Tina....
A majority of Anti Depressants now also have indications for anxiety. Here are a few...
Zoloft
Effexor
Lexapro
Paxil
I am not on an anti depressant but just make sure that the one you go on has an indication for anxiety as they don't all...Some also have sexual side effects. I was on Wellbutrin to quit smoking (its the same drug as Zyban) and at the time I didn't know it was also an anti depressant, I will tell you what, I had more energy than I ever had in my life! I almost didn't want to stop taking it. And it did not have any sexual side effects. :-) Choosing a med like this is trial and error. What may work for some may not work for others. Make sure before you get your prescription filled that the doctor has given you a month of samples. This way you don't waste your money on something that doesn't work for you.
Good luck!

Hey Tina.....sorry, can't help you out with this, but wanted to say HI! Hope ya'll are enjoying the race!
Hey Tina,
I have never been on any anti-depressant/anxiety medications but I know people that are. Paxil is one that my ex-husband was on and it helped him. However, when he ran out early look out he was a mad man. I know none of should be stopped abruptly but if you do decide on paxil just make sure you don't lose them or run out before your next refill. I hope you find one that works for you.
Rae
Ps. I know Lexapro is now being used to help treat anxiety. However, everyone is different but my girlfriend was very absent minded on that drug and had bad mood swings. You'll have to talk to your doctor and may go through a couple different ones til you find what works for you..I am sure what works for one person may not work for another.. Good luck Tina! Rae

I was put on Paxil about 10 years ago and have been on it since. At first I wanted to jump out of my skin, it made anxiety worse. So I was on xanax for awhile. Then things leveled off, the Paxil started working , and I didn't take xanax very long.
I know Paxil is being advertised for social anxiety disorder.

I was on Zoloft, and it worked GREAT for my anxiety, but I also had a script for KPins, so maybe it was them too..
I am now on wellbutrin, coz altho it rid my anxiety, depression was the biggie. WB does not do all to much for my anxiety, but it has done wonders for my depression.

Hey Tina,
I get prescribed my medications by a psychiatrist (bipolar, anxiety, PTSD, social phobia etc) and she just recently switched me from Lexapro to Effexor because of my anxiety. Both are supossed to help anxiety but I did not notice anything different when taking Lexapro and I have only been on Effexor for under 2 months and my dose is still being increased (start on 75 mg up to 300 mg) but I have noticed a slight improvement in anxiety and noticable improvement in energy levels already.
Antidepressants can take up to 3 months for their full affect to be felt so it can often be a long process finding the right one as we all have different chemisty.
In the past I have been on Paxil for depression only and that was good but I was always tired, and prozac which I found good, but I was only prescribed those for depression.
Prozac, Paxil & Lexapro and all SSRI's (Selective Seratonin Reputake Inhibitors) - So they work on one of the neurotransmitters Seratonin. I think ? Wellbutrin is also.
But Effexor is an SSNRI (Selective Seratonin & Norepinephrine Reputake Inhibitors) and it also a weak inhibitor of Dopamine, so it works on 3 neurotransmitters.
There is a ADD type test at www.brainplace.com that can be helpful in understanding which neurotransmitter requires help. It also states foods, supplements and medications for each. Hope this helps
Hugs

Wellbutrin is not an SSRI its main target is Dapamine first (motivation, reward recognition etc) , and seratonin and the other second.
misty,
i heard that insurance companies arent paying for wellbutrin because it is prescribed mostly for stop smoking. thats just what i have heard. you might want to check into that as well.

Boo...You are correct however all it takes is a phone call to the doctor or insurance to tell them the diagnosis is anxiety or depression and not to quit smoking. Plus when it is for quitting smoking the script would be writthen (if written correctly) for Zyban even though it is the same molecule.

Thanks to all of you for the great info......
I am not worried about what insurance will pay for I have never had a problem with them before.......the doctors write they pay.....
I am glad that the paxil helps you Betsy. I couldn't take that it left me with no emotions at all and didn't help the panic or anxiety......and as soon as I stopped I felt like a person again instantly.....Xanax I tried too but it made me feel like I was jumping out of my skin, that might be a good thing from what I read. But if I take anything this time I know never to go ct thanks to being on here.....
Charmed I checked the site out.....wow right up my alley I love stuff like that. I am gonna take the brain test later and see how screwed up I truely am...lol Gonna even make the hubby do it......
Well I am off to look up Zoloft, didn't know that helped with anxiety thanks GHT.
Love,
Tina

I have been on every antidepressant known to man, mainly for panic attacks/anxiety and am on Zoloft & Wellbutrin right now
Zoloft, in my opinion, is the best for panic attacks. It makes you a little speedy in the beginning, but once it's stable in your body it works really well. The main side effect is lowered sex drive/difficulty reaching orgasm.... Trust me - I have tried with all my effort (if you know what I mean) & there are times it just WON'T happen, even taking care of things myself.
Wellbutrin is more for addictive behaviors..... it is often prescribed to help control cravings and compulsive behaviors. It's also great for energy & won't make you gain weight like others (like Paxil) will - in fact, I have no appetite whatsoever on Wellbutrin & lost 6lbs on it. Side effect is that it can make you real speedy & cause trouble sleeping.
Paxil is also good for anxiety attacks, but I didn't respond to it. I'm kind of glad now because I have heard reports of people having a hard time getting off of it; when they try to quit, they get "zaps" like electricity running through their bodies & crushing headaches. Weight gain is another side effect.
Lexapro made me really dizzy & gave me chest pains. I was on it for less than a week.
Buspar is for panic attacks, but I was on it so long ago & I don't remember how it worked.
Restoril is a great anti-anxiety medicine that is used for nighttime panic attacks (helps you sleep).
Prozac is an older antidepressant that works well, but the side effects are similar to those of zoloft, magnified about ten times
Hope this helps!

Hey Tina, i just had a look on Medscape fro info on Wellbutrin cause I didn't know much about it. It doesn't fit into any category of anti depressants but this is what it did say:
Wellbutrin is an Aminoketone-Derivative Antidepressant Agent
Clinical studies have not resulted in any accurate reasoning for the success of this drug as it appears to have little effect on the reuptake of Norepinephrine or Serotonin, Although reuptake of Dopamine is inhibited.
Wellbutrin does not appear to be effective in the treatment of panic disorder and concomitant phobic disorder, however, the drug generally improves symptoms of panic and depression in patients with major depression who have superimposed panic symptoms.
Hope it helps

Thanks Danni,
I am still reading some stuff on zoloft.......I see that they have it down for social anxiety disorder like Paxil......Danni do you have more social or generalized? I am betting it is generalized. That seems to be my problem. I really don't like to hear about the sexual side effects.....but I know that some of these meds cause that. One thing I will be talking to the doctor about.....
Charmed,
Thanks for the extra info on Welbutrin.......I got a bunch of info on panic, aniexty, stress....The role diet, allergies, vitamins can play into all of it. If you are interested I can send it out to you. Just email me rtrka5@yahoo.com. If nothing else it made for real good reading.
Love,
Tina

Hi Tina;
I've been on effexor xr 187.5 mg per day for about 4 years now. I'm happy with how it handles my depression and anxiety. For me it does have sexual se's. Also, since I was taking pain killers too while on the effexor I probably need a longer period of time "clean" to offer a legitimate and informed response. Still, wanted to let you know.
Good luck;
Jim

I tried welbutrin once to help in quitting smoking and from the first pil I was crying uncontrolably , called my doc who said to stop immediatly , he said in some people the excess brain chemicals it works on and keeps in the brain is to much for them. Just be aware that if unfortunalty this happens stop and call the dr. Ray
I'm off the Zoloft now and just on the Wellbutrin and it's been fine so far..... Ramon, that's weird the side effect you had. We all react differently to different antidepressants, so it's hard to tell someone what will work for them. Before I got on Lexapro, I knew people that PRAISED the drug & talked about how wonderful it was.... it was a nightmare for me.
Maybe the reason your side effect didn't happen to me when I started the Wellbutrin is because I got put on zoloft at the same time, then tapered off

Well the winner is Effexor........
The doctor gave me a 3 month supply and said I need to take it for atleast 6 months to see if it is working......He also gave me Hydroxyzine(sp), it is like atarax an antihistamine, non addictive that has been shown to help with anxiety....it has calming properties....I even got my referral to the allergist and he was so sweet and young and handsome and smart he doesn't do benzo's.....(but thats a secret so don't tell the hubby)
Jim if there is anything you can tell me about when you first started it I would greatly appreciate it.....
Ray thanks for the warning.....I will be looking out for strange mood changes and calling the doctor right away...
Hope everyone is having a great night and I can't thank you all enough for all the help and info you gave me.....

LMAO John.......You know you have been quite the jokester lately. I saw what you wrote to SP....and I laughed.......nice having fun again isn't it....
I will let you know how it works.....hope I don't get to many funky side effects. Most curious about the antihistamine and how that will work and what prmoise it may hold for others who may need something for like rescue, and don't want to be in benzo hell.....Would be a much safer alternative....
