I don't know what to do...I'm currently in a MMT program and have been since June 12', this was after I had struggled with addiction to oxycontin for 8 yrs from 15 to 23. I have a mother who's currently on percocet from her Dr. and my sis who's never been an addict and is a RN who are the main 2 people that judge me for going to the clinic to "get my drugs" according to my mom and my sister of course doesn't understand why I don't just hurry up n wean off methadone n be a "normal functioning adult n mother to my daughter". And I'm sitting here wanting to scream bc I feel "normal" for the first time ever and I just wish they'd be either more understanding, or something, bc I'm not quitting the clinic anytime soon bc I don't want to be
withdrawing, back on pills, or unable to function n take care of my baby bc of massive anxiety n feeling miserable everyday. I don't take my mom seriously really bc I know she's in denial about her own addiction but it hurts bc she doesn't want to be labeled as an addict like me, like I'm beneath her or something.
You have to do what is best for YOU! It's YOUR recovery!. Actions speak so show them you can do it. Everyone is different and not all clinic's are the same. Good luck.
Steph 28,
Congrats on making the choice to go on methadone! The problem is that a lot of folks, your mom and sister too, do not know about how and why methadone works. The stigma that goes along with being on it it is rampant, police, doctors, judges, the list is endless. Methadone has been safely used for decades(1960's) in treating opiate addiction. Please ask your clinic for information for your family to educate them.
It IS NOT substituting one drug for another. Did you know that Methadone does NOT fall into the category of being an addictive drug? For a drug to be classified as being addictive it needs to be taken every few hours, like heroin, every 4 to 5 hours, or like oxy. Pretty soon you are taking 8,10,12,15 pills a day trying to get the high you felt in the beginning of your addiction, right?
Methadone lasts 24-48 hours and is one of the most studied drugs there is. I am on MMT and take my methadone every day along with my blood pressure meds & my thyroid meds, no difference to me. People think that because you get sick if you don't have it makes it bad or addictive, but have you ever thought of what happens when a diabetic doesn't have their insulin or an asthmatic doesn't have their inhaler?? They get sick. After a few days without your methadone you may not feel all that great either, doesn't mean you are addicted.
The longer a person has used opiates the more damaged their brain becomes. To educate yourself go to the left side of this board and scroll down to most popular topics and read "Your Brain on Opiates". This is also FABULOUS for those who don't understand opiate addiction. Check it out and see if you agree. Like girltoday said, it is your life and it should be your decision. Detox IF and WHEN you are ready. There is NO rush. Talk to your clinic counselor and do what is best for YOU. You say you feel better than ever? Thtas what matters, that you are doing well and not in active addiction mode.
Good for you!!!! Good luck sweetie!
