Financial Insecurity

Okay Guys,

I received my yearly rent increase and it went up more than I thought it was going to.............can you tell me how to let go of this financial insecurity that is now coming up for me? Yes, just so you guys know, I am taking my will back, and trying to figure everything out, I'm not trusting God....I'm analyzing what I can let go of, what I can't....finances, that's still hard for me in recovery!

VWG aka Geri
Hi VW Girl

Couple of things - there is a bible verse you can look up - it refers to worry and about God clothing the lillies in the field and feeding the beasts so why are you worried about where does your next meal or coat come from - if he takes care of flowers and beasts or course He will take care of you.

If you look that up it may comfort you.

I also have some very good affirmations about money and financial insecurity in a book at home. I'll try and remember to look those up for you over the weekend and post them.

On a practical level - take a look at your own spending patterns, there may be lots of money you are spending that is wasteful and that if you change your spending habits you might comfortably find enough to pay the extra rent.

I have some experience in this area and if you want to discuss some practical and relatively painless ways of re-looking at how you spend I would be happy to help you - offline if you prefer. You have my email address.

Or perhaps you are already very thrifty in this area and the solution lies in a different direction.

I put this one out for everyone - a really good exercise to do is for 1 month write down every single thing you spend money on. Keep an expenditure diary - even if its only a packet of gum. This can get a little tedious but its so worthwhile. You will be astonished at where your money goes.

I added up how much I spent on alcohol over the last few years and almost had a heart attack.

Anyway VW maybe this rent situation has come about because this (money and finances) is an area in your life that you are ready to start dealing with now? Only God knows that.

Idgie.
Well,on a lighter note, when I was in the height of my addiction, I'd simply not eat. Couldn't keep much down anyhow, so saving money on food was an alternative...
LOL
Then there's always kielbasa and kraut or beans and weenies--keep you at home from the illnesses so you save gas money, reduce food bill, lose weight and, although you have to buy more TP, you can sell your clothes to the thrift store 'cause they won't fit anymore....

Do you have a cat? I've heard it's, "The other white meat," too... And that'd reduce the cat food AND litter bill...

Of course, there's the tried and true method of praying for some guidance, but that's SO AA...

Hi Geri,

I am going through similar issues as well dealing with finances. I am trying to handle each bill as they come, and start tightening up where we can.

I am working on my concious contact with God, praying, reading the 11th step in the 12 and 12 , and when I take it back and all the fear comes back up... I try to get quiet and turn it back over. Have I been doing this perfectly...NO. But I have to believe that It will be ok. I'm trying to do the legwork in the mean time....meeting God halfway.

I wish I had better answers for you.....but know you have a friend in all of us and we are here for you. And know there are lots of people going through the same situation ....makes me feel not so alone and keeps away the hoplessness.

love,

Sometimes when we pray to god for changes in our lives they start with a few steps backwards or sideways and as the smoke clears a new horizon can be seen......

Hi Geri - here's some things to ponder:

this first lot is from a book designed to help people become mega-successful and/or rich - however, many of the ideas can be applied to anyone, even if you only have $10 in the bank.

Identify your limiting beliefs about money: though it may seem odd that anyone would have a negative predispositin towards wealth, often we hold these beliefs in our subconscious from childhood. Perhaps when you were young you heard:

Money doesn't grow on trees
There's not enough money to go around
You have to have money to make money
Money is the root of all evil
People with money are evil, bad and unethical
People with a lot of money are selfish and self centred
If you are rich you can't be spiritual.

(you get the idea).

(source: The success principle, by Jack Canfield p373-374)

You need to look at what ideas you've developed about money over the years and see if maybe you need to challenge those ideas.

Write down the limiting belief
eg: Money is the root of all evil

Challenge, make fun of the limiting belief
eg: Money is the root of all philanthropy OR Money is the root of great vacations.

Create a positive, turnaround statement - that is personally emotionally powerful for YOU.
eg: When it comes to me, money is the root of love, joy and good works.

(adapated from above source)

There is a whole large chapter on money in this book, which you may be able to find at your local library. Read it if you can track it down. some of it is changing the way you think about money but some is practical ideas as well.

so
A few affirmations to help cope with fear of financial insecurity and change how you look at money.

God is my infinite supply, and large sums of money come to me quickly and easily for the highest good of all concerned.

I now have more money than I need to do everything I want to do.

I am making positive choices about what to do with my money.

Every day my income increases whether I am working, playing of sleeping.

People love to pay me money for what I most enjoy doing.

(source: The Success Principles, by Jack Canfield p378)

OK this lot is from another book, similar concepts but presented differently and aimed more at the everyday individual (I found).

Concepts to understand and accept to help conquor fears about money and financial insecurity.

1. There is plenty for everyone. We must reject the false idea that there is not enough to go around.

In fact there is more than plenty. s regards our relationship to wealth, nothing is lacking in us, our basic nature is to expand, to increase and to create more. so we cannot "get" rich: we can only acknowledge what we already have. And out of our acknowledging what we already have, that which is already ours, our demonstration of wealth increases.

Our actions and behaviour are always supporting greater wealth or greater lack and limitation. Everything that we have is a demonstration of our awareness, or consciousness of abundance.

...We are made in the image and likeness of the Ultimate Reality or the Creator. And that is us. Our lives are made in our image and likeness. Our mistakes stem not from any inherent flaw in our being, but from ignorance.....we have to let go of the decisions, beliefs and blockages that are keeping us from the reaching of potential, in this case, experiencing wealth.

clearing our beliefs about wealth (same idea as other source)

Affirming our relationship to money (same idea as other source) Here are some more affirmations.

give myself permission to enjoy money.
I release my unwillingness to be wealthy.
I am rich in consciousness and rich in dollars.
I accept that money is flowing into my life right now.

(source: Advanced formula for total success: Dr robert anthony p106-111)

There's a whole lot more including ideas on:
The more you outflow, the more you inflow
The concept of a universal bank (a variation on tithing)
The law of circulation
How to be a good receivver
How much can you accept?
Seed money increases riches

Again, you may be able to find this book at the library and have a read through it or at least this chapter.
Hey Geri
well i hope some of that is interesting and maybe even useful for helping you get your head in the right place. I put a bunch of stuff in there in hopes something might strike a chord for you.

I find some of the concepts interesting, some I agree with more than others but I always like to challenge my thinking on these things - especially as an alkie I can get caught up too much in thinking my ideas are right all the time.

When I find myself strenuously rejecting a new idea is probably the times I need to look more closely at that idea.

I hope you are having a good day and have given some of these problems back to the one who can solve them for you :)

your friend
Idgie.
Hi Everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to "hold my hand' through my head totally giving me food for anxiety, etc....

Special thanks to Idgie! Thank you for taking the time to post all you did and I am going to print everything out...I really, really appreciate it and it was helpful. The one part that struck me as something I really need to examine is my "ideas" about money and what I learned about money in my childhood...it all is really good stuff and I'm feeling better today!

With humility,
Geri
glad you are feeling better today.
Hi Geri -
I am totally on board with Idgie's ideas and have been trying to change my thinking as well. I am someone who doesn't need much to be happy, like you I suspect, but I also get nerved up sometimes thinking that there won't be enough, we're in too deep, etc. We carried no consumer debt until November 2007 when we had to rebuild our burned out vacation home and the bills piled up quite rapidly. My younger one is off to college in the fall (she got into Boston College, UVM, and UCONN - yay! and has a Yale interview on Tuesday - proud mama here =) We still have several thousand to spend on reconstruction costs before we're through at the end of this month, but we need to do it as it's not only a vacation home but an income property. So I'm a bit freaked and so is my husband.

BUT, I am in the process of convincing myself - successfully I might add - that this will play out to a happy financial ending. I just keep telling myself (and my husband) the money will be there one way or another and it has really calmed those nagging voices. Some will say that it's not reality, but believing has always helped me - my HP will provide whatever I need. So far, so good.

MnM ~ Thanks for the reply...you're right I don't need much to make me happy...we struggled when I was a child, I struggled in my marriage and I still struggle, but don't get me wrong....I could certainly let go of some of the extras I incorporate into my budget...God is good all the time I believe and He hasn't brought me this far to drop me on my head! My ex-husband does very little to help our daughters, so alot is on me....my oldest is in Junior College and the youngest one is a Junior in High School....but I'm okay today, that's what the Ladies in AA have asked me..."are you okay today, do you have a roof over your head, do you have enough food...., etc." and my answer is always "yes, I am okay for today..." and that's all I've got! I've been tracking my expenditures for a few years now...and have been able to cut back...so, I will be revisiting my financial situation once again, now that it is the beginning of the year...best of luck with your situation too. I'm so glad you're here and posting!
