As I discover sobriety I am also re-discovering forgotten loves that got abandoned in my love for alcohol.
One is music. I used to LOVE music, rock and roll is my gig - real hard edge, pounding rock music espcially rock with a social or political message - which most good rock has.
For years and years now I've ignored, buried my love of good rock music. And when I did listen to music it was always 80's stuff - you know doing the old "glory days" thing. I never wanted to hear anything new.
I always wrote off new music as "crap". Oh no-one writes good music anymore blah blah blah.
so the last month or so I have been making a concerted effort to listen to "new"music - and for me that is even music that is 5-10 years old cause I missed all that. I've stopped listening to the 80's station and started listening to the youth station and alternative music stations.
And WOW there is some great rock music being played out there. I have discovered some bands that I LOVE. So I have taken to spending some of my post-alcoholic savings on buying some CD's of this great music.
I'm happy to spend my money to support some of these great young bands and to have this new music to listen to at home.
I've also re-discovered the joy of dancing round the living room like a lunatic!!!
Anyone else re-discovered any old loves since putting down the bottle? I'd love to hear about them.
Have a great sober day everyone
Idgie.
Hi Idgie,
I have picked up my guitar and started practicing again. I had about a year or so in before booze shoved it aside... Its been a couple of weeks now and I'm starting to get into the habit of working at it again. Man, if I'd spent the last 7 years practicing instead of drinking....

Awesome Thread Idg!!
Music is sooo my favorite too. When I used to get wasted I always listened to sad music and cried my eyes out.
Once I got sober I didn't really listen to any music at all because all of the music I liked made me think of crying and being drunk.
Well over Christmas I got a new Ipod and I put every one of my old school CD's on it. I can now listen to my music and dance and just feel happy. I don't feel sad when I listen to any of it anymore.
I too love the old stuff. I am more of an old Motown Girl and R & B. 80's is my absolute favorite music.
I opened an I-Tune account and now that has become my new addiction.LOLOL I have downloaded soooo many songs. It's great! You don't have to get the whole CD only the songs you like.
Maybe someone will get you an I-Pod for your birthday! Wink* Wink*
Thanks for the lighthearted thread Pal. I needed this when I got home tonight. I was DD for the evening and I was left feeling exhausted and annoyed. I kept telling myself over and over again, "It's not their fault you're an alcoholic, it's not their fault you're and alcoholic!!
I feel much better now. In fact I am listening to my music as I type to you now!
Have a good night Pal!
Thanks for this thread. I forgot all about the music thing pal.

When i was drinking i only played the music on the jukebox that everyone played and the only song i knew the words to was the one i was going to leave as a suicide note
Then when i gave up alcohol and regained my senses, the world of lyrics opened the part of my mind that loves words and song and poetry:)
light and love zac

Thanks For This Thread Idgie,
Somedays depending on whats going on in my own personal life and those I love, my mood. I feel things get to deep sometimes here on the board and I need a break from it. There are times I need to let some of what go's on here go, or think about it at a later date. To many deeps seated issues with all the other recovery things I'm involved with sometimes is to much for me.
So, I really want to thank you for this light hearted thread and your picture's you posted. I love nature it's my happy place. When I'm not there, I use imagery in my mind. I loved that lizard.
When I was drinking all the time, I too would put on all that sad music. Misery loves company. When I was younger I listened to nothing but rock n roll & disco.
Now I listen to contemporary christian, jazz, classical, acoustic guitar, blues, country, soft pop and classic rock n roll. I love music it feeds my soul. Sometimes at night if I can't sleep I listen to creation scapes, very soothing.
Everyone have a pleasant day!

Hey lookingup
you're welcome - altough recovery is a serious thing LIFE should be a joyous thing and we all need to take time to "smell the roses" so to speak or what is the point of recovery?

I know most of you have been giving some real "deep" answers. I am going shallow here for a moment.
Anyone notice that their taste buds came back full force??? I used to hate mangos and now I realize it's because I couldn't taste them. They are really yummy and healthy! Everything tastes better now!!!
Is it just me.

Hey Val it's the same thing for me with icecream.
Hey Zac, I'm glad you posted that!!!
Today I too wake up to music humming in my head, a song playing and what a blessing as I used to wake up with dread, regret, shame, ugliness...
I love waking up in the morning now...
