Hey Izzy,
Hows it going there,
Good stuff you are on em now ay? I think from what I remember they took a few days to kick in, You dont really feel it , alcohol just doesnt seem appealing,
Are you on Naltrexone as well?
If not next time ask the dude that put you on Campral if you can have them as well, In Australia they use the both of them together and have had a huge success rate, But I only done naltrexone for a couple of weeks maybe a mth, made me crook,
Also are you getting any sort of counslling along with this treatment?
You can email Izzy and we can talk there if you like

I dont get as much net access as I used to but do at least twice a week,
Email me Izzy, and good on ya for doing it, they worked for me and you can just ask Zac how much I used to guzzle!!!
Proud of ya

Izzy? Did you get a satisfactory reply? I was given Campral and Disulfiram (Antabuse). The trick is to keep taking it while you work on the mental part of the addiction. If you drink while taking Campral it kind of doesn't matter. If you TRY to drink with Antabuse, you'll definitely be sick. REAL sick.

But back to Campral. I found that it takes very little time to "kick in" if you're taking it three timesa day. The issue that *I* had was that too much of it started making me paranoid and overly aware of stuff. Maybe that was just me. I DID find that it was very helpful in reducing cravings for tobacco which I quit back in June, so it does work on physical cravings. It doesn't fix the psychological addiction, though, and that's the part I'm currently working.

Good luck.
Hey SKG, I agree, you do need a bit of mental stimulation with them, such as counslling etc, I have mentioned that to our girl Izzy,
I found campral good SKG, i also had naltrexone with them which made me feel hungover!
Take care Ginge
I was looking over Naltrexone and comparing it with Antabuse. Apparently the latter's been around since the late 40s? It also can have some small psychosis effects, apparently. So if we're crazy when we drink, does that make us regular when we're drugged? I DO like the fact that I CAN NOT drink or else it'll make me sick. I mean S.I.C.K.! But yeah, the bottom line, and what I think only counseling or AA or having a sponsor that's gone through it can help, is coping with the need to change lifestyles.

Take care.

Hi SKG. No I'm not getting any counselling because I went through the GP. I'm on a waiting list at the Hospital for their alcohol centre counselling but I wasn't very impressed with the bloke I saw when I was trying to get Campral the first time round so I'm a bit dubious about them... but I will go along when I get an appointment... Just coz I'm dead nosy lol...
I don't want antabuse as I don't trust myself on it and neither do the professionals... because I have od'd in the past...
And Naltrexone's probably a bit heavy for me... the Campral is working fine and I'm coping on that... Ginge'll tell you... he's great...

Hi Izzy.
I could be wrong, but I think there are purists out there that think having help with Campral or Antabuse or whatever is cheating somehow. I'm all for whatever it takes because different things work for different people. I was doing fine with the Antabuse and Campral, but took myself off thinking everything was fine. There are a number of reasons for it, but the bottom line is that, at least from my perspective, the more you know about the addiction the easier it is to make decisions concerning getting better. Cognitive Therapy? Anyway, I'm up for individual counseling (something I hadn't done before) and spending some time talking to folks about it which I would never have done before because it's always been a personal battle.
I've always thought it was a bit odd that people who had such strong beliefs about their own recoveries could be so judgemental.
Thanks for the reply--and stick with it.
