the term once an addict always an addict is used in most circles to discribe that once you cross the line to being addicted to a substance you can never cross back over... to none addicted use within your own control... even with cigs in your pa situation... wonder if you could have had just one after a meal and not had an other for a week or two with out any cravings or anything.. bet not... that is the addiction part....
once we flip the switch to addiction and abuse to the substance mentally we crave its effects and physically the tolerance we got is still there... it may go down a little but it never returns to normal... so... once an addict always an addict... we can be in recovery but there is no cure.... we are never cured.... not fun to hear that we will always be an addict but it is true....

As with alcoholics, once and alcoholic always an alcoholic, although you may be a 'recovery alcoholic' as we are and always will be recovering addicts.
