Hi, I'm A Pot Head Who's Trying To Quit

hi, I'm jon a college student I smoke everyday. But my studies are failing and find that I have no motivation to even get my homework done. I'm not one for postings or internet comunitees but I could use some help from peers. I'm embarressed to ask for help about smoking pot, but I've had anxiety issues my whole life and feel that pot is making both worse and better. I guess its an addiction as opp osed to what all my pot head buddies tell me. I also live with 3 other pot heads its usually pretty smoky in here and I can't move out till june. Well any help advice or just people to talk to would be grand.
thanks
jon
Hi Jon, thanks for your post. Not everyone who smokes pot becomes addicted, but I certainly did. I smoked casually from age 15 to 16 and then one night I really got off on it, and after that I smoked addictively for the next 18 years. I finally flashed to the fact that I am a garden variety drug addict (I experimented with lots of other drugs as well as alcohol but always came back to pot) and I then took steps to quit and to recover from my addiction. Recovery from addiction is a life long process.

You are lucky. If you are smart enough to realize what you are now, you might still salvage your college career and those early professional years that are so important for launching a career and family. I assure you that pot will only stand in the way of your achieving these and many other good things that life has to offer.

Most of us who smoke addictively have some underlying issues and I promise you, in the end the pot will only make these issues much worse. I hope you will take that last statement on faith so that you do not wind up in the dark place I was in when I finally bottomed out and let go of pot.

I have posted a lot on this board and I will not bother to repeat it all. You can read my posts and Rubie's (she is a college student who quit last semester) and get an idea about what is involved. I also recommend that you spend a few minutes looking at the MA home page. It has some good info on detoxing that most find helpful.

If you have any questions, or if I can help, please feel free to drop me a note on this board.

Good luck,

August

Hi Jon,
Welcome. I can relate to a lot of what you say. I was embarased to get help quitting smoking also, but I found this forum to be hugely helpful.
It is difficult to quit smoking when you live with smokers, but it is not impossible. If you are committed to quitting you will be able to do it regardless of whether the people around you smoke. I quit smoking cigarettes while I lived with three roomates that smoked, which I thought was going to be impossible, but in its own strange way it reinforced my desire to quit. I was fortunate enough to not live with someone who smoked pot when I gave it up but I did find myself around pot on a semi-frequently basis and it was not hard to not smoke. I was deeply commited to give up smoking though. My biggest struggle was coping with how awful I felt without the pot, which for me was a bigger challenge than not smoking it. This was astonishing to me.
Since you appear to be stuck in your living situation until June perhaps you could spend less time at home. I imagine living with so many guys it isn't easy to get school work done. I suggest spending more time at the library studying, since you mentioned you could not motivate yourself to get work done. This way you are focusing on something that is important to you while removing yourself from a situation where you may feel pressured to smoke. I found after I quit smoking I excelled in school at levels I never thought were possible for me to reach. I wish you luck. You're in good hands here. I encourage you to come here and read posts when you face difficult imes. So many have offered great advice and stories which allow you to know you are not alone. I found it very helpful
