Hi
I was wondering if anyone has tried any holistic approaches for treatment and found them successful?
I figured that since my daughter is refusing all meds, except 25 mgs of seraquel at night, this may be an avenue for her to look into.
Also, after years of heroin abuse, I know her body has been beaten up. Nutritionally, was are some good supplements?
I have to be careful of which herbs or minerals i suggust, because she is being urine tested 4 times a week and I dont want that to throw it off.
Thanks AGAIN!
Hermom
I dont know gyac is the one to aske he knows alot abot thisi think
Dear Her Mom,
I kind of went crazy with the herbs and minerals with my son...trying to make him better. I was told to back off of some of them. He is currently (started after about a year of being heroin free) on a product called "Zing" to improve his energy level. He said he can feel a big improvement with it. In fact, I don't have to remind him to take it and he lets me know when it's getting low. Don't worry...he's not abusing them!
A calcium/magnesium supplement was recommended to me by someone on here at the time and the doctor was okay with that, but you should check with her doctor about any herbal treatments you give her. Even though natural, they can have a bad affect if used in the wrong combination. Used the correct way, they can be GREAT!
God bless!

Hermom,
When I first got clean from heroin my drug counselor gave me "the guide to wellness".....a true bonus to recovery. Heroin depleats alot from the body( mind and spirit)and once off it the best thing to do is to give your body what its been missing. Herbal medicine(DO YOUR HOMEWORK.......she/you should research well and your daughter should use in moderation) is a good way to start. As the fog lifts, juicing fresh fruits and veggies(organic if able)is a great way to go....both for me helped with alot of the after affects of heroin addiction(tiredness, lack of energy, eregular digestive system, etc.). Also to add to that a good vitamin give your juicing that extra boost(5 of my female friends in recovery take"Only One"...from Whole Foods.... I am told they contain EVERYthing the body needs). A healthy and balanced diet completes the body set.....then it's on to the spirit and mind . Hope this helps. All the best to both you and your daughter!

PS....Suez...Thanks for the recomendation.......... :-) !!!!!!!

My Gosh.......these posts are making me feel depleted and out of shape.
Hermom, as everyone else gave excellent advice I can't add too much. I was at one time pre-heroin a macrobiotic. You are very wise to look into all of this, and as mentioned do your homework. I absolutely didn't take any herbs. Herbs are to be respected, and in my opinion classified somewhat just like all this crazy modern medicine out there. They have their place, and can work wonders, but being an addict I knew if White Willow Bark helped with headaches I would take three instead of one. etc. BTW don't work for me anyhow.
AMINO ACIDS. I can't say enough just how much amino acids helped me. The building blocks to our bodies. Again, CAUTION.
I took this L-phenylalanine. It's an amino acid, and is for mood. I took as directed, and I freaked out like a wacky, looney chick. It made me speedy. Which alot of heroin addicts I know are already naturally fast thinkers, impulsive, talk fast, animated. Now a psych Doctor might say that is "Mania", and instantly diagnose one as "Bi-Polar". I say that's hooey. Just me now. I say it's my nature. Chemical make-up, and it's my shinning personality. Heck, if I was Bi-Polar I'd have a manic episode, and create something. I don't even clean my room up so I nix that theory.
L-Lysine is wonderful, and safe. MOST IMPORTANT!!!!!!!! B-Complex. I swear it really, really helped keep me clean. You feel better you are less likely to go back out. We're bruised and banged up, and B-Complex has the folic acid in it we need as women too. Your daughters hair, and nails will be the reward of those two. A visible sign often helps us see things are working. No kidding. Note the hair, teeth, and nails of a heroin addict. Not good. That L-Lysine is also good for things like fever blisters, and ulcers too. Golden Seal is a herb, but one that I have taken. Purifier. Natural antibiotic properties. I think that one is safe if taken as directed. Golden Seal rocks.
You can get the B vitamins in a multi vit.. They even give ya one in detox, but I think we need a seperate B-Complex. Just me again. Only me. Gotta do the homework.
Spirit. Oh, and that is awesome your daughter is refusing pills of any kind except her Sereqoel. My friend Tres on here takes that and it helps her awful anxiety. Anyway, yes it is a good sign. Back to her spirit.
YOGA. If she can find a class I can promise you she will not be sorry. If she is open to it than by all means get right to it. Yoga was better to me than heroin. Well of course better to me, but I mean in as setlling my mind, quieting my thoughts, giving me hope where there was none, erasing all the ugliness outside my own head. Helps also to calm us down. Problem solve. It's usually not expensive, and perhaps as a treat for her doing so well someone might give her a gift cert. I have never been, but want to go so bad to..................
Accupuncture. I have heard wonderful things about it. Even helps with cravings. Only thing is the needles/pins are involved. A nice hour therapuetic massage too would lift her spirits like nobodies business. Again expensive, but if every recovering addict had access to that I know it would help. After I hit like seven months clean my brother sent me to a fancy spa for a massage. One I had used to go to monthly when i was a real human being. LOL The best part though is he went over and paid for it before i got there.
I-Yi-Yi us addicts set ourselves up for life regarding money. LOL People don't hand cash over to us too quickly even after years of being clean.
I am sooooooooooooooo happy for your daughter. Also so thrilled for you to have your girl back. It seems like just a minute ago you suffered so, and she was going through it. Ya got one tough chickie there ya raised hermom. I salute you as a wonderful mom. Happy Healthy Foods. A little chanting maybe. Prayers of course as always, and amino acids, and B-Complex. All is well.
BTW Darin I am getting that book. I wish I had your counselor. I'maaaa look up who has it. I have to wean off of Christina Cooks. That Christina Perrillo. No offense I know she was saved from death by macrobiotics, but she's not looking all that spiffy to me. I suspiciously think that public TV woman is partaking in refined sugar on her days off. I really think she does.
WHOOPS. One more thing hermom. Lavender. If she is open to using aromatherapy or something even like it. Lavender works wonders. She could buy it in it's condensed oil form. You can put it on cotton balls and just put them in corners of the house, and stuff. Lavender is good for sleep also. It comes in many forms, and there's so many different ones to use in aromatherapy. Treating herself well really helps.

Bryn,
You can always add something as you just have proven as I forgot to add exercise. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
PS...."the guide to wellness" is a program that she(THANK YOU MRS. STRAWDER)created from her own daily rituals. Over the years she saw MANY patients(me included of course)come and go and thought about ways of helping beyond the getting clean part. She taught that instead of running to a Rite Aid, CVS, or Wallgreens that some of the best wellnes tools and remidies come from your back yard....this beautiful space we call earth. Hope you are having a great day!
