just interested in how long people are generally on methadone for?
how long do you usually spend tapering off?
know everyones different but just wanted to get an idea of lengths of time people spent 'on' and 'getting off' methadone.
Was on methadone for 3yrs and tapered off in a 6 month period.
thanks for replying GYAC, that gives me hope for my boyfriend who has been on methadone for 2 years and has just started tapering, the plan being 2 ml a week which would take him 6 months.
that is the idea anyway but i think it may take longer than this as the dose gets smaller as he says he may have to stay firm at a dose for a while and maybe take it slower the lower he goes...which sounds about right from what i have read of other peoples stories. seems the last 20ml are the hardest.

Hello ..Sash...in my case i have been on it 6yrs.&to be honest have no plans to come off..thats just me..i find it works&also i was heavily addicted to benzos(valium, temazepam, xanax)whilst on heroin so it sort of counteracts any cravings i have for either sort of drug.Dont get me wrong i wouldnt advise anyone to stay on it any longer than they have/want to..so after 2yrs. i think yer b/f has a v.good chance of tapering slowly off it&i think the speed in which he is doin it is just right.Take care all the best...Davey
Hi Davey, if the methadone is working for you then stick with it. everyone is different and should do what they think is best for them, thing is my boyfriend doesnt like it and wants to stop, he scared though, as am i, but we wil just have to take each day as it comes. take care. x
well, in general i've heard 2 years is usually the norm. I was on 8 months started going down at 4 months but, went down faster then recomended 2mg a week. So 4 months going up 4 months going down.
zerogirl..that was quick..have you managed to stay clean after? did you feel bad when you were tapering down quickly..experienced wihtdrawel symptoms? did you carry on normal life when you were tapering over the 4 months? (work for example?)
sorry for all the questions!
my boyfriend is sticking to the 2ml reduction every week..even though last night was a sad and talked about tapering quicker...as he feels trapped by the whole methadone thing and hates the thought of being tied to the clinic for another year
