How Much Suboxone Is Too Much?

After reading others' sub stories, I can't help but to wonder if I am harming myself in the long run and taking too much per day. This is my 4th day on sub and I am taking 12 mg. per day. That is what was prescribed. I was taking 150-170 mg. of oxy daily. The sub feels like the "right" dose. Most of the people I met at the clinic take more.
Dear Atlas,
After awhile you can taper down to a dose that you feel comfortable with like 4mg 2xs a day. Yiu would be suprised at how well it works because it stays in the receptors of you brain an less is needed after awhile. The higher dose always made me feel tired. The first week I still went through a wd but without the pain and cravings if that makes sense, but I still had chills, fever very tired while on the 16mgs of sub. So ask you md when would be good for you to kind of stablize at a lower dose...........All my Best...shel
Hello,atlas
After a couple of more days it will be in your system good and you want need as much or shouldnt .I was told, just what i was told shouldnt take over 16mgs a day.Ive seen where some are on more on here .They say the less is the best.I was supose to take 14mgs i belive it was and i havent had to have near that much.If you feel comfortable and dont think you need as much then dont take as much.Ethier way if the w/ds hit you by lowing you know you can take more and will be out in 15 mins or so.I started of at 8mgs and felt fine on it.Im down to 4mgs a day and hopefully will come off soon.My doctor said most that wean down do it 2mgs everyweek. He has also said many how tried to come off to fast.My doctor said comeing off sub. is alot easier then the pain pills and you will get many answer to this here its what many people have experimented......Take care.crystal
Atlas the max dose prescribed with sub is 32mg a day.Alot of people say less is more. The amount Im on is right for me & what Im taking it for.you may not need such a high dose but really to play it safe Id let your Dr be in the drivers seat as far as cutting back & stuff.I understand how badly you want to be drug free but if you rush things you may end up relapsing....mj

My friend (male, 52) was hooked on 20 roxicodones and probably 40 mg of methadone a day for quite some time. when he got out of treatment he took no more than 4 mg of sub a day and it worked for him. He said one time he took more than that and he was up all night and it made his teeth chatter. just wanted to pass this along---i hear less is more
Hello Everyone,
I hope you are having a good day. I am also on Suboxene. I began on 8mg a day, then went up to 20mg and now stabilized on 16mg a day. It's been awhile on that dosage. My Dr. is now beginning to taper off 2mg in a week to 2 weeks, whatever works best for me. I am not rushing either. I want to make sure I take it slow and have my recovery "solid". I am also trying to manage pain. I think you have gotten great advice. Your Dr. will work with you. But I agree, for some of us we have used pain pills for years, so I want to stay patient. Please keep us updated on how it's going. Have a wonderful day. Take care, Best Wishes
It all depends on the person and what your habit was...Your body will take you what is working....Try dropping down a little and see if you are ok...If not then take some more but don't take it all at once...A little at a time will allow you to find the correct dose...When I was on it I was ok on only 4mgs and after a week went down to 2...Just make sure when you taper yourself off you go all the way down to a 1/4 mg that way your body will gradual wean off it making it a smooth transition...
Hi Atlas:

In june of 2004 I took my first 2 mg--I came in to the hospital W/D from a 100-200 oxy and in between 10mg percs. I took 2mg after not taking any opiates for 28 hrs aprox.

I felt a bit better and was given 2mg more and sent home with 3 more pills and a script.

I have never taken more than 8 mg. on any given day. I managed to get off sub after about 8 months but got sick in my 4th day totally off and have been back on sub due to a freak infection. I am now facing a surgery on my throat and will be using the sub and motrin for pain. They are removing a polyp. My sub doctor said it was my choice to go the morphine--perc sub or just suffer a bit.

F-Morphine. I love it. And it owns me.Its not even myDOC

There is no answer to your question but most people start 2mgX4 times and wean off depending on situation. We all have different issue's. I have chronic pain and I am Bipolar as well as just plain crazy.

Atlas check this site out.

Hope this helps Atlas..

Have a good night and take care--Jeff
Dear Jeff I never realized until this post just how much alike our problems are.Last year I had throat surgery to remove scar tissue from my voice box.I have to do this every couple years as scar tissue always tends to grow back.I was on suboxone when I had the surgery & I told ALL the right people(Dr wise, surgeion etc)Do you know they STILL offerd me lortabs???!! I couldnt belive it.Anyways I just want to say I hope your surgery goes well. With mine I didnt even need the advil after.Good Luck,,,,mj
Thanks Jeff,

It must be hard facing surgery knowing you can't have morphine or percs because they own you. They own me too, but you're right, F-them. The situation you're in now is one of the main reasons I want off. I feared i would someday need surgery or be in an accident and be totally out of luck for pain control. I kept imagining being in the hospital after an accident and being given ONE vicodin for pain. How could I explain to the Dr. that I need 10 percs every 3 hours just to keep me "normal." And I don't handle pain very well (go figure.)

What do you do to manage being bipolar? I'm fairly certain that my sister is bipolar but not yet diagnosed. She's also addicted to pills.

A woman at my sub clinic had a terrible fall and has multiple facial and rib fractures and several other injuries and she said she was managing pain ok from sub. It sounds like you're thinking clearly about your addiction, so everything should be ok for your surgery. I wish you well.
Hi M.J

What I have learned about the addiction to pain meds is you do not really know your tolerance to pain. Eventually I will need major surgeries where morphine drips will be necccessary assuming I live long enough--LOL

For now if This doctor tells me I will be O.K I trust her. Scared as I had this done 3 yrs ago and it sucked. I had all these polyps in nose and throat. This time just throat. So I should be O.k. F-it if she is wrong I will call on my dear friends miller and Jack to help through the night.

Atlas I spent aprox 20 +yrs Bi Polar and never was diagnosed. How I acheived raising a family for 14 yrs and being a businessman since Iwas 16? I am just plain crazy? People lIke me when they get to know me. I am not shy. Make people laugh and in sales make the buyer job easy. I miss my career very much.

Today I am trying something called cymbalta. I was diagnosed Bipolar in 2001 but did not get treatment until 2004. I have no idea how I worked or was a father and husband. I broke my hip in 1999 and had my first hip replacement. Introduced to Oxy and it was all over. Went to a rehab in 2001 as My Oxy and Zanax and phenobarbatal was killing me. I got clean and then relapsed as I has another hip replacement in 2003. Never went back to phenobarbatal but was out of control with Oxy and Zanax to calm me down. I am Nuts.

Anyway to stay sober I gave up my house my dog my kids and said goodbye to a pretty special woman who stuck by me through it all --AND traveling and as of today still trying to get some quality of life back. I am very depressed as I miss seeing my kids grow up and due to my health cannot make enough money to pay my bills. But it is the only way for me to survive.

Today I am O.K clean since May 7th but just seem to always have to be fighting to get through the day.

Much like all of us. We all have our stories. I am no different than some pot head who cant stop smoking. If your life is becomes unmanageable does not matter the amount of drugs or how long your out using. I was addicted to pills at age `14 I just turned 43. My DOC is Cocaine. I love it and miss it very much. My last line was in 1988. We are all alike just different names and places.

JMHO Atlas hang in there this board is wonderful.

Sincerely,,

Jeffrey

Atlas meant to tell you My nose wa a good judge for me to when I needed more Sub--I would get a runny nose. Then the cramps but always a runny nose.

Atlas it is so IMPORTANT for you to get involved in AA/NA. Some people can do it alone right from the start but not many IMO an addict needs AA and therapy as you really need these tools to be able to identify and then correct our character defects.

Jeff
atlas,

Glad to see you're doing well on the Sub.
It is very important to take the lowest dose possible and taper off sooner rather than later. You did not have a large habit for a long time like many others here have. Sub is only a tool to get clean - but it can become a nightmare with worse and longer w/d's then you would have just getting off the hydro without Sub. Sub is an opiate and IS physically addicting if you take it for too long. Personally, I would bet that you could take just 6 or 8 mgs of Sub tomorrow and not have any w/d's. You can try it and if you need more then take more, but if not then you'd be better off..... JMHO

Jeff is SO right in what he just said about getting involved with NA/AA!!!
Staying clean is much harder than just getting clean!! NA will give you the tools and suport needed to STAY clean.
I thought for SOOOO long that I did not need NA. I was SO wrong!!
NA is a life-saver for many, myself included.

Please consider this ..... I wish I would have listened sooner ....

All the best to you!!

:-)
