My 18 year old daughter has been abusing oxycontin 40 mg a day for about 3-4 months. At least that is what she told me. A couple of days ago she came to me an told me she wanted to quit taking the oxy's that she was tired of them. I found out that a 27 year old man is the one that started giving them to her. He is no longer in the picture and even though I don't put 100% blame on him he should have known better. I have done some checking around and he has been taking them for two years I don't know how many milligrams. I knew something was wrong when I met him a few months ago he talked the whole time and just couldn't shut up. I told my daughter that something didn't seem right but of course teenagers know everything. Anyway, two days ago she said she wasn't going to take any more oxycontin. My question is how do I know if she really has quit? She seems to be itching and has stomach upset but that is about it except today she seemed a little sleepy and depressed. What should I expect her to experience? Is 40 mg a day for 3-4 months a lot?
She just left to go to a friends house and I just pray that she stays true to her word. Any information for advice would be greatly appreciated.
Katt.
If she quit she would be sick as a dog. You would have no doubt. Unless she possess a special non-withdrawal mechanism unknown to the medical community and us!
Unless she has some magic formula for withdrawal which she should publish and make millions, I would have to say she is still using. Sorry. Hope I'm wrong.

Hi Mothers Angel,
I think if I remember right oxy wd really hits on the 3rd day......
So if you are seeing her getting worse instead of better then she isn't using....
Sneezing, yawning, itching, stomache upset are the first signs.....the restless legs, spiders in the blood....come next, and it won't be pretty......
Check her eyes, if they are pinned she is most likely still using......
I hope for her sake that she isn't....
I will keep you both in my prayers...
Love,
Tina

I agree with Kaela. Your daughter should be in bed right now having a very difficult time, not at a friends house having a good time. Unless she is not like everyone else I know that has detoxed from Oxy's. Everyone is different but MOST people have it rough for the first 10 days or more withdrawling off that drug! Unless she is taking suboxone, which is doubtful since you don't know about it.
She should be having lack of sleep, irritability, restless legs, body aches, sweats, headaches, lack of energy, diarrhea. She may not have every single one of those symptoms but for the most part she should be. Just an overall severe case of the flu. Especially since you said she has used 40 mgs of oxy's a day for over 3 months. Oh yeah she would have a severe case of fatigue and moodiness. The itching you talk about is USUALLY associated with taking a naroctic. It is a side effect of pain pills. I used to itch all the time while taking percocet, vicodin, methadone etc! That is a common side effect.
There are many OTC medications that would help her when she deiceds to get clean and honest about her drug use. You could also start going to a NA meetings with her. I would BEG my 18 year old daughter to go with me. Do whatever you need to do but keep trying. Rehab, out patient treatement, sub doctor whatever. That's about all I can suugest. Hope it all works out for her. She can make it with your support. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

If you can, get her into inpatient treatment now! I regret not getting my 18 year old son in when I first found out and he had been using only a few months. But he said he could do it on his own, and he did for about 7 weeks, then used again. it has been a downward spiral since then. He didn't do inpatient until he had almost a year using under his belt and relapsed 6 days out. He was right back at it hard as ever, and now we are looking at some serious legal issues. He started suboxone last Thursday and I am praying this will be his turning point. Stoppping Oxy's is VERY difficult. You have a very tough road ahead of you. Get help for yourself, find an Alanon meeting, and if your daughter really wants to stop now, get her professional help, don't let her try to do it on her own. My experience is it doesn't work, and it will be much harder down the road. I will be praying for you and your daughter.
