Hurricane Ike

Well to start I live in the midwest "Ohio" no where near any coast line. I live in a major city. Hurricane Ike blew thru here leaving over one million without power. Huge windstorm from Hurricane Ike with no rain water just wind up to 70mph. My house was without any power for 3.5 days. First time ever a windstorm took out power in Cincinnati area that long. Today 4 days after the strom still people without power. Only 5 out of 25 area gas stations had power Gas and ice were sold out. The news is telling of mystery free ice it would take 40 mins for me to drive to either of the two places giving ice with no gas nor a gas station that's just not gonna happen. I have power back now anyway.. Being i'm in the midwest we don't prepare for friggin Hurricane problems. Thankful the house still stands. There was NO WARNINGS on the news this thing was coming my way. The news is calling it a FREAK wind storm..don't know how 70mph winds blew under doppler radar?.
Anyhow besides that the schools closed so I've had the kids home ALL WEEK long. If I lived within 500 miles of a ocean i'ld not be so shocked. Been very annoying to deal with the outage. This has little to do with my recovery but, this stress has not been to helpful with the process of being sober....lol could not even get a beer everything was closed. Crap I had family in Texas who lost EVERYTHING but, they knew they lived in hurricane areas. How that storm screwed up so much is mind blowing. http://www.local12.com/content/brea...2b-4e76cc520361
This strom took massive trees RIGHT out of the ground. So i've learned to be prepared we did not even have a CAN opener that was not powered by Electric. We had no candles no way to cook one flashlight. After this i'm getting a supply bag ready. Who knows when the next FREAK wind storm will hit. Thank GOD it was not winter we have froze to death waiting on power. We were so unprepared. I could have cared less about the t.v and lights we also had no phones no gas no food no hot water.
Glad you and your family are ok ZG, yeah could imagine how stressful it must have been, and not to get a beer to calm your nerves...nightmare. No warning? Thankfully you're ok. Hope you have a good weekend. Take care, Kev
NUTS!

That's so crazy!

Glad you are alright as well, honey.

I messaged ya, yo.
Still today there are people in the area with no power. So glad my power is back on. It's something you don't think about untill you don't have it. Things are getting back to usual.
I can definitly sympathise with ya ZG..........I lived in Key West in the early 90s and we had hurricane Andrew blowing over us.......to be truthful it was an amazing once in a lifetime experiance.I worked delivering frozen seafood and the whole thin area of south Florida was blown away ...trailers just picked up and dumped far away........just like a giant hand picked them up and tossed them. Also my Ma was watching its progress on the news in Ireland but i couldnt make a phone call for two days as the lines were all dow........yer right in what you said we dont appreciate things until they aint there.
Take care all............Davey

Man,that sounds way to intense for me to deal with. What about people that need their medicine in the AM??
The worst we deal with over here in NJ/NY is a wicked snowstorm once in awhile - & maybe some flooding.
I remember NYC losing power and having a Blackout for a couple hours and it was a dangerous situation. No subways- no red lights- no power anywhere -
This was about 15 yrs ago, the cops had to take back the streets from the maniacs.

I hope your making out the best ya can- -
best regards (of course) ,
jack

Davey ?
Key West ? Why you old margarita drinking , sun worshiping old salt- I never new that - that's pretty cool. I never made it to the Keys during all my travels. I was supposed too- but got as far as Miami, and well... you can finish the story..
Im sure.............
see ya later

Yepper Jack i arrived in Orlando airport with 300bucks to my name and heaed way south on a greyhound bus.....a pal of mine told me i had a place to stay etc.......but as these things go i knocked on the door and it was a case of no room at the inn....boy was i pissed with my mate.So what does a desperate mick do .......you got it head for the nearest bar.Chatted to the barman who of course was Irish also .....he told me to get to the youth hostel and ask about for jobs there.........my luck held out i booked two weeks in the hostel.....so that was me down to bout 150dollers........and oh so luckily got a job making fridge magnets the next day for five bucks an hr.of course i was working illegally.....the place was a small operation run by an ageing hippie who i bought my ganja from and a very shifty Corsican. After a while i was doing three jobs a day early mornings with the magnate duo, then an hr.cleaning a diner.....were i got 15bucks and my main meal.......then busboy/dishwasher at a notoriusly gay restaraunt........all good fun in a way regret coming home....but it was a great 18mnths and gave me insight to the U.S .Take care all.
P.S after a month i moved into a house sharing it with a stoner student aged 17 and a Vietnam vet.....wild times......specially when the vet called Raul was drunk....which was usually most of the time.....he would get out his war photo collection ....he was in the 82nd.airborne......and get really emotional when he explained all he went thru and the buddys he lost,he did two tours......but all this would only come out when drunk when sober he would tell ya to f*** off if you posed a question even relating to Asia .....sorry for the ramble.Take care folks..........Davey
Hay zerogirl,
I live in Dayton, some people still without power. I was one of the lucky ones, and only lost power for about 24 hrs. My apt. is on the same circuit that feeds a traffic light, and they were fixing all them first.
a lot of people I know had to throw out a lot food.
It was nuts, the clinic even had to dose people using a hand pump & flashlight.
The College Campus was closed for two days.
I can't even fathom what the people in Texas are going through.
The Ohio valley was totally unprepared for a storm with stained winds of 50 to 70 mph. We didn't even get any rain with it. It was strange.
Zekk I could toss a rock and hit you ...your that close to me. I was acually in Dayton Saturday night...i have a friend who lost power there for a day. It was NUTS we are so far from the coast no rain at all weird as crap.
Davey a hurricane is never a good thing but, at least when one lives near a ocean it's not a freak thing to get one. This was the 1st time EVER "that i know of" for one to hit the midwest. I love Flordia my mom had a house in Naples few years back. I've stayed in both Flordia and California Flordia is a nicer state IMO.
