Our church "adopted" a young man just getting out of a halfway house. He was truly a good worker, attended NA regularly, fit right into the church as well as helped three sick women because they needed his help. He was very wonderful at first, but then started telling me all kind of tales of how he needed money. He now owes me close to $2,000 dollars. Also, right at this time, he is sick with a viral infection. After not seeing him for two weeks, but just on quick run bys, he finally came in this last week---with a complete personality meltdown. He also had that "smell" another lady was talking about.I know there is nothing I can do other than advise him to see his sponsor, get counseling, and take off from working until he feels alright. He does have a six to 2:30 p.m. job. He's spent all my money on his habit and has taken from the other two ladies. Since they are in worse shape than I am, I have reimbursed them without them knowing he got into their checking accounts. I flat don't want to yell. etc., but do know I am enabling him. I won't do this anymore, but oh how I wish he could be helped in some way other than all the ways tried. Can you give me any leads? I have counseled drug and alcoholics, but to me the only thing that really can do it is AA or NA. He is working so hard to have God beside him, guiding him.
I hope you have talked to your preacher about him. There is no excuse for him taking money from sick ladies. He has found a very good source of money to support his habit. I would be very careful about who he is allowed to help. How did he get into their bank accounts and why are you repaying the money. He is stealing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not cover his tracks for him. You are enabling him. You need to stop.
Naive,
Let's see.....he got into the checkbooks of two elderly women from the church. I am assuming he wrote the checks out to himself. I think they call that Felony Theft and Check Fraud. I'm sure the bank and the police department would be very interested in speaking with this hard working lad. And his two week "viral infection" is called a binge.
