I have a relative (not my son) who is a heroin addict, and I see the revolving door of hitting bottom, rehab, relapse, jail, back to rehab. There's no end to this madness. It dawned on me that his environment, the very environment and culture that led them to heroin, hasn't changed. His friends are largely the same, he knows all the connections of where to get his next high. Even when he becomes clean for a bit, a new girlfriend may offer him something, and he's right back into it.
So it got me thinking, if my son were a heroin addict, I would immediately take a job in Singapore and bring him with me. A complete change in environment, culture, contacts and laws I think is necessary to break this vicious cycle. The first thing you see in Singapore when you land is "Death to Drug Traffickers Under Singapore Law." Same with all the other Chinese-majority countries (due to the legacy of the Opium Wars). I think it's cathartic to see for a drug addict. A place like Singapore will be a new chance in life, without the criminal record, shame, and most importantly the people who enable and deal him the drugs.

if your son was a heroin addict do you think he would go with you- very simplistic to a problem you know very little about obviously
Many drug addicts have a real desire to quit. If he wouldn't go with me, then it's clear sign to me that he has no intention of quitting and should stop wasting my time with stories. It's essentially a litmus test for sincerity. If heroin addiction is really a disease, and he has a desire to get rid of it, he would go with me.
If he is an addict/alcoholic like me then desire is the first thing needed.
Then a program of recovery ......
Rehab isn't recovery, it is pre-recovery. Like kindergarten is to education.
A spin-dry to get your feet on the ground so you can begin to focus on your recovery.
Recovery for an addict/alcoholic is a lifelong process.
All the best.

I guess until you were in the situation yourself you don't know how you'd really react...
