Irc Channel For The Regulars.

Is anyone here firmiliar with irc (internet relay chat) ? if so we should pick a server; wether it be efnet, undernet, ircnet , etc.. and start a channel of our own. I have a couple channels on undernet I moderate. A music channel and a video game channel. I could set up another channel for us and get a few bots in there to hold it.
The boards are great and all don't get me wrong but I think it would be nice to have an instant chat room where we could all talk in real time. It's nice because you can just easily scroll up and down through all the text to see what everyone been talking about, plus it's nice to know if that certain person you want to talk to is online rather than having to wait to get a response. I hope i'm not stepping on anyones toes with this one, especially the moderators. But if you guys think that would take away from the boards too much then I understand that fully as well.
sounds good to me
I would like that.
I think that would be great. I'm in. :-) Hope you are well Plow King.
pk
that would be awesome. count me in.
hey plowking - if i'm home and alone/private (rare ha) i'm in:)

allrighty then. If you all are firmiliar with accessing irc and the servers within it then I will start on creating the channel. I will post the info to the channel and how to get to it once i get some bots set up in it. If you are unfirmiliar then goto mirc.com, download the latest mirc version (yes you can use it free without registering.. it will just display a popup everytime you open it which you can just close) and set up your nickname and user info and from the server list select any undernet server until you get it. Once you are in then in the status window type /join #recoveryguide
I will hope to have a few bots set up within the week to make sure the channel stays 24/7. Give me a few days to get er goin.
Looking foward to it. TY
ok the channel is ready to go.

Just open mirc and find the undernet server that works the best for you.

For me the fastest is undernet:us,az,mesa

you can also just type /server mesa.az.us.undernet.org 6667 in the status window.

then just /join #recoveryguide

if things get going in there i'll try to keep track of the busy / slow times. And maybe we can even set up our own meetings at certain times or something of the sort.
meetings on the computer. now im down with that. bubba got us set up. its pretty cool guys.
ok so I see that some people have been having a few issues with getting the mirc thing setup. I will hopefully within the next few days compile a tutorial to smooth out the process.
pk - a tutorial would be so helpful. you rock! jojo
my internet connection has been screwy lately.. very up and down so if you do set mirc up and go to that channel and see nobody there thats why. I hope to get things in order soon.
ok well. Here's a little tutorial for getting mirc up and running.

1./ Goto mirc.com and download the latest version which is on the left hand side.

2./ Install it into whatever folder you want. It doesn't have to be program files/irc
I have mine installed into c:\mirc

3./ Now it will prompt you to set the program up. A box will pop up with a bunch of channels. For now just close that. Then you will see a setup box under the tools / options tab that looks like this in the left hand side of it:

+connect
+irc
+sounds
+mouse
+dcc
+display
+other

If you click on the + of each of these they will bring up sub folders with more options. For now just worry about the +connect part.

-For full name and email address type anything you like.
-For nickname type whatever nickname you like. Keep in mind there are thousands of users so try to avoid a nickname like "mike" or "karen" because they will most likely be taken.
-For alternative type in something that will be used if the original nickname you pick is taken.
-Put a checkmark in the invisible mode box
-Put a checkmark under new server window box

now for the sub folders of the +connect folder
they are:

-Servers
-Options
-local info
-Identd
-Firewall

For the servers folder set the following options:

Servers:
-Under IRC Networks scroll down till you see undernet
-Under IRC Server select any server. If one doesn't connect then choose another. I don't know where everyone is located so you have to choose the server based on what one works best for you.

Options:
put a checkmark beside all 4 boxes and leave default port at 6667

local Info:
just leave everything in there untouched

Identd:
put a checkmark beside Enable Identd server
-Set your user Id to be anything as long as it's not more than 9 characters.
-for the system: and port: part just leave it and it will fill itself in upon connect. If it is already filled in then thats ok too.
-Leave the 3 other boxes under that unchecked.

Firewall:
leave everything here untouched as well.

now for all the other parts like

+irc
+sounds
+mouse
+dcc
+display
+other

just leave them all default until you get more comfortable with the program. Then you will slowly start to see what you want to change or not. These parts are very user specific so what I may like to have set you may hate...

Like for example under the +sounds tab i have no sounds enabled because they annoy the heck out of me.. and im usually listening to music so they just get in the way.

4./Ok so now that you have it setup you can try connecting. Back at the base connect folder simply click the button that says connect to server. (there is a little picture of a sun on a box beside it).
Now you will see a bunch of text including a message of the day, a bunch of stats, and other miscellaneous things scroll by.
Once that is done you will be all ready to go and in whats called the "status window"
from here you can access channels by simply typing /join #channel name
ie./ to join the recovery guide channel just type
/join #recoveryguide
to join other channels its the same thing, you always need to do # first.
now you can chat away in the channel. And also if you look on the right hand side you will see all the users in the channels. Simply hilight a name and right click on it to bring up all the options that you can use on the person.
-Info will give you all info on that user
-Whois is the same thing but it only appears in the status window
-Query will bring up a private box where you can have a private talk with that person
-Control brings up more specific options : like Ignore, which will not let you see that person is typing. Use this if the psrson is getting to you. The rest there like voice, kick, ban only applys to channel operators.
-Ctcp sends commands to the person
*Ctcp ping lets you know how long it takes you to recieve a message from that person.
*Ctcp time shows you what timezone the user is ine
*Ctcp version lets you know what version of irc the person is running.
-Dcc send is a way of sending files to and recieving files from that user.
-Dcc chat is just the same as query so don't bother using dcc chat.

-And lastly Slap!.. well click it and see what happens.

ok so this is as far as im going to go with this tutorial. If this still doesn't make sense then either I suck at doing tutorials or you suck at following them :
if you need additional help you can always click the help tab and choose help files.
EDIT
ut oh wonderwoman.. from your edit im sensing maybe you got frustrated setting it up?

anyone else having problems still.. and what areas in particular? i need some feedback here peeps.. thats if you guys have even tried the program out yet?
I was all set up, your instruction were great..... and my husband shared that it's "unsafe" and suggested I find an alternative chat space.:-(
something about open source software ???
Unsafe? ok well I have been using this prog for the past 10 years.. I have also been doing computer networking / security for almost as long and can tell you that mirc is about as safe as it gets.. unless of course you set up stupid options like auto recieve files through dcc and such.. but whatever i'm not gonna argue it.. if noone wants to take advantage of this great client then so be it... i'll just shut the channel down.
dont shut it down
