Is This Cheating?

I know it is wrong to take a drug not given to you by a Dr. As you know, I am following the Ashton Manual with great success. I have a delimma though. I kow what I am asking is legally wrong but I am more worried about my recovery. To make a long story short, I have a horrible toothache, comes and goes but too big a puss to have it fixed. Anyway, when it came on today it came on REALLY bad... whole side of my head is hurting. My mom said to take a propoxalene (sp) and lay down. I know there are no interactions with Xanax and propoxwhatever it is but would this be cheating? Or is this a totally different scenerio that has nothing to do with my recovery. I am in so much pain I would cut my own head off if I could. Advice please. Side note, never used/abused pain meds, they make me feel itchy and a little sicky sometimes. I now this from trips to the dentist, they usually gave me a few of those Vicoden things. Let me know what ya'll think.
Propoxyphene... that is what it is called.

Propoxyphene
(proe POX i feen)
Darvon, Darvon-N, PP-Cap

What is the most important information I should know about propoxyphene?
Do not stop taking propoxyphene suddenly if you have been taking it continuously for more than 5 to 7 days. Stopping suddenly could cause withdrawal symptoms and make you very uncomfortable. Your doctor may want to gradually reduce your dose.
Do not take propoxyphene if you suffer from depression or have suicidal thoughts.
Propoxyphene will cause drowsiness and fatigue. Avoid alcohol, sleeping pills, antihistamines, sedatives, and tranquilizers except under the supervision of your doctor. These may also make you drowsy.
Propoxyphene will also cause constipation. Drink plenty of water (six to eight full glasses a day) to lessen this side effect. Increasing the amount of fiber in your diet can also help to alleviate constipation.
Never take more propoxyphene than is prescribed for you. If your pain is not being adequately treated, talk to your doctor.

What is propoxyphene?
Propoxyphene is in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics. It relieves pain.
Propoxyphene is used to treat moderate-to-severe pain.
Propoxyphene may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Who should not take propoxyphene?
Propoxyphene is habit forming and should only be used under close supervision if you have an alcohol or drug addiction.
Propoxyphene should not be taken if you suffer from depression or have suicidal thoughts.
Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have
kidney disease;
liver disease;
asthma;
urinary retention;
an enlarged prostate;
hypothyroidism;
seizures or epilepsy;
gallbladder disease;
a head injury; or
Addison's disease.
You may not be able to take propoxyphene, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.
Propoxyphene may cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms as well as other harmful effects in an unborn baby. Do not take propoxyphene without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.
Propoxyphene may also cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms in a nursing baby. Do not take propoxyphene without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Children younger than 12 years of age should not take propoxyphene.
If you are older than 60 years you may be more likely to experience side effects from propoxyphene therapy. Use extra caution.

What other drugs will affect propoxyphene?
Propoxyphene may increase the effects of oral anticoagulants such as warfarin (Coumadin), which could lead to bleeding. It may also increase the effects of carbamazepine (Tegretol), which could lead to dangerous side effects. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are taking either of these medications.
Do not take propoxyphene if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. Dangerous side effects could result.
The most serious interactions affecting propoxyphene are with those drugs that also cause sedation. The following drugs may lead to dangerous sedation if taken with propoxyphene:
antihistamines such as brompheniramine (Dimetane, Bromfed, others), diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Nytol, Compoz, others), chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton, Teldrin, others), and others;
tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline (Elavil) and doxepin (Sinequan), and serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), and paroxetine (Paxil);
other commonly used antidepressants, including amoxapine (Asendin), clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Pamelor), and protriptyline (Vivactil);
anticholinergics such as belladonna (Donnatal), clidinium (Quarzan), dicyclomine (Bentyl, Antispas), hyoscyamine (Levsin, Anaspaz), ipratropium (Atrovent), propantheline (Pro-Banthine), and scopolamine (Transderm-Scop);
phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), fluphenazine (Prolixin), thioridazine (Mellaril), and prochlorperazine (Compazine); and
tranquilizers and sedatives such as phenobarbital (Solfoton, Luminal), amobarbital (Amytal), secobarbital (Seconal), alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), flurazepam (Prosom), and temazepam (Restoril).
Do not take any of the drugs listed above without the approval of your doctor.
Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with propoxyphene. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines

I know your on Xanax, so just be careful. The best thing for you to do is get into a dentist. They will take care of that pain for ya. If not it will keep coming back.. I know what ya mean though, I hate the dentist but most people don't like it,LOL
Take care and hope the toothache goes away, I know they are so painful! Rae
So although it would be morally wrong, it would still be safe to take one of them? (Im at 3 mils a day Xanax)
I would never want to tell you to do something and it hurt you. That info I sent said not to take with xanax it could be dangerous! Call a pharmacist in your area and ask him if he thinks it would be safe to take together... Have you tried Advil or Motrin. I would start with those first. Gotta run~ Good luck~ Rae
Wal-greens said no interactions but I fiqured some of us would have first hand knowledge. God, I have taken aspirin, advil, motrin and nothing even eases it. Friggin' tooth numbing stuff won't even dull it. Child birth was more pleasant.
Oh I know it girlfriend. I have had 3 c-sections and would go through another before I would want a toothache. I have had my share of those and having wisdom teeth removed. OUCH! That hurts. I don't know what's worse a toothache or an earache? Hope you get some relief very soon... You really need to start some antibiotics, they will help with the pain. It sounds like you have an infection and would need to take some antibiotics before having it removed anyway! Rae
I researched the meds and it is Propoxyphene Napsylate 100mg. Is that a safe amount to take with my Ashton plan? I took 1 mil xanax at 6am and one mil at 12pm. I would like to take the Propox now but want to hear I will be Ok, you know how panicers are :(
Here an obvious answer, go to the dentist, if your that afraid of screwing with your recovery, you should be less afraid of the dentist, your looking at maybe 3 seconds of pain from the dentist (shot to numb you) then he will kill the nerve or fill the tooth, whatever happens, when you leave his office, you won't have anymore pain.

Regards,
Tom
Hun I don't know sh*t about that drug to tell you what to take and what not to take it with. Like I said Kaela, I would call the pharmacist back and say hey I am on xanax and was precribed this 100 mg pill should I take them together? Go by what he says, maybe he would tell you to split it in half. I don't know what to tell you. That would be my best guess. Can you get to a walk in clinic? You would be surprised at what 1-2 days of an antibiotic would do....You need some sp?Penicillin,Amoxicillin,Biaxin something along those lines. Trust me on this one. Rae
I too was terrified of the dentist but I found gentle denistry and it really was not that bas. You really better get in though because it sounds like you have an infection and that can travel. good luck
Some people on this board are so negative all the time *rolls her eyes at fishboy* Although I have been on this board a short time, I can truly say I have never heard one supportive word spew from your mouth... you know who I am referring to.
Anyway, back to those that matter. As I was saying, most people fear the dentist but us with an anxiety disorder WOO... terrified. Thanks for ya'lls support. The pain is easing up alot. I have heard of Denistry for Cowards, it is an actual office here. I believe they call in like one valuim to be taken the day of, then they gas you, then give you the shot. Not real sure but people who have gone say they are very compassionate to those that fear denistry. The whole dental thing seems so morbid and archaic to me. HATE IT but know I have to face it soon. Toothaches always come back. :(
hello sweet heart ... ok dear you need to go to the dentist dear it could turn into a abese and can kill really my sister got so ill she ended up at the er with iv and it went to the blood ect IM scared for you dear so go dear and no moeny go to er they should help you my angel ok thats my thought love poopie... and has far has your soberity you no what to do you no whats best for youselfe take whats good throw the rest away poopie
Kaela,
I hope you find relief from your toothache and the answer to what you can take for it. I am not familiar with the drug you are referring to, or the Ashton plan for that matter, until now, thanks to your informative posts.

Toms reply was a supportive and obvious post, how was he to know you were fearful of the dentist? I thought the same thing. I'm sorry you are not feeling it from him, he has helped me alot here. I try not to get involved in this kind of stuff, mods even warned us not to, but I think its really important in your recovery to get something out of his questtions in his posts. Its not an attack, its a legit question, especially when we are not familiar with your program. The term Fishboy was given to him, by myself I might add, in love and fun, thats kinda gone now.

Take care

As I research toothaches I am learning they can actually cause infections that go to your brain and that becomes very serious. Money is an issue right now so maybe I should go to the ER. I know it is affecting a nerve because the side of my mouth has lost some feeling. Gosh, if it isn't one thing it is another. Thank you so much for the warnings on toothaches, had no idea it could be so serious
Go to the ER. They will give you some antibiotics and they will help with the pain. They will probably give you some type of pain medications also. Go to Community or St.Joseph's, it shouldn't take to long. Let us know how you are feeling later.

Ps. Tom was just trying to help Kaela, he didn't mean any harm... We understand your in pain. Go to the ER and get some relief!
Redd: we are addicts, we are moody... sensitive, insensitive... all of the above. I don't want to begin a feud either, not healthy for anyone. Although they can be very entertaining! I can be as big of a smart a** as the next guy but I try to refrain from sarcastic remarks when someone may be feeling uneasy about something. To make a long story short, I suppose I was trying to say noone likes smartasses. Even helpful ones. To be witty is wonderful, to be sarcastic is common place. Thank you for asking about my toothache. It is gone altogether for the moment, but toothaches always come back so I know I have to suck it up... soon :(
Kaela,
this is so refreshing that we can talk like this, I appreciate your reply. The reasoning behind my post wasn't to defend Tom, well, maybe a little, but it really was for you. In my own personal experience, I have found that I have to gather what I can from who I can. We are all not going to be friends here on this board, and thats OK, those are extra bonuses along the way to our hopeful recovery, I wish you nothing but success on your journey.

No problem, this will be my last post to you, If you think I am being negative and attacking you, it simply isnt true, I was was just stating what was obvious to ME, and trying to lessen your fears for the dentist, dont worry, it wont happen again........

oh, and by the way, you said "eww touchy, glad all the knives are put away" in elvis's thread, that wasnt being neagative or sarcastic now was it?
