HI,
We received bad news on Saturday that my brother in law was caught as a drug mule in Brazil. He was caught at the airport. It seems he had a small amount of drugs on him, and was the decoy. I am not very close to him, in fact have only met him once. But my parents in law and wife are obviously very worried. He is a lonf time addict, and has been in trouble with the law his whole life.
We have contacted the South African embassy, but have resigned ourselves to the fact he will do jail time.
The reason for my post is to find out if anyone has any knowledge of the jail system there, and if their are any ways to alleviate the difficult conditions of his stay. I saw a documentary once, and it seems the prisons are run by the prisoners. It seems moneyt is the currency for food and medical attention.
Damn this scurge. It makes us do the most insane things
Any advice appreciated

It's really dependant upon the amount he had on him, but the jails in any form of devoloping country are pretty unpleasant.A friend of mine in is in prison in thailand and it's the same there if you have money your stay can be, well lets say made a little more bearable, I know from visiting my friend in thailand, and I'm not sure if it's the same in Brazil, but there the only food they are given is a small pile of rice and some insiped fish sauce that stinks to high heaven and if you want anything else you have to buy it off the guards.I'm not going to sugar coat things but I would think that your brother in law is in for a pretty hard time of it.
