Has anyone taken the amino acid, L-Glutamine to help curb cravings, and/or to just feel better? When I take it I think it really helps...
Kitty
hi kitty no I haven't ,but I did have relaxers in the first week to help with the physical symptoms. I have to warn you about cravings though, please watch out for such things as mouthwash, toothpaste, chocolates and certain foods ANYTHING that contains alcohol because these things can bring on cravings. I learned that the hard way from mouthwash. Take care Kitty and good luck on your journey to an alcohol free life. I wish you all the best.
Hi Kitty,
Welcome to the alcohol board.
Yes, I used L-glutamine and several other amino acids for around two months to reduce cravings. I couldn't find my notes. I researched links from this website and read about ortho molecular science. There were three amino acids that I kept finding at various sites tryptophan, L-glutamine and phenylanine. I bought a high soy protein based drink with 18 amino acids and numerous vitamins and minerals. I also bought gaba butric acid pills. This combination helped me immensely with cravings.
I'm now done my research on Royal B Jelly, B- pollen and B-Propolis. My order is on it's way from a reputable co. I personally have become very interested in homeopathic and naturopathic healing.
I'm also researching astragalus, olive leaf and oregano oil. These herbs were given to me at the local health food store to build your immune system.
Of course there are other modalities that I do for my sobriety. I started trying AA again a few wks ago as I want and need to be open to all types of protecting, gaining knowledge for my sobriety. I've never made it this far and don't want to lose it. But, I'm not an AA die hard person. It's fine for anybody who wants it to be.
I believe in all types of sobriety and healing. My mind is open. There is more than one way to achieve happiness, peace sobriety in life. I like the combination approach.
When I first started getting sober I listened to a meditation tape with candles. I used a rubberband around my wrist and snapped it when they were coming on. I looked at the clock and saw them peak and then just like the ocean the ebb and flow they died down. I sat in a chair and body surfed to. Practiced mindfulness. I would vision a big black train coming to get me and take me somewhere very unpleasant. I also used this same imagery to ride the white train to my happy place in nature full of peace and beauty. The sounds of water.
I to believed I drank to relieve depression and anxiety. Well those are two of the many reasons for myself. The funny thing is after about 3-4 months much of the depression and anxiety has gone from being sober. The brain is working to repair the damage. And I'm helping myself by gaining tools and applying them.
I also do breathing and yoga. I've done therapy. I still have had some bad cravings around milestone, full moons and when I've been physically, mentally, spiritually ill. Mostly though they are just an occasional thought. Which leaves as fast as it came.
Yes, I couldn't have stayed sober without a higher power whom I call God. But I know people who have been and have stayed sober on their own and are quite happy. I also believe in the law of attraction. Have you read the book the Secret, or watched the movie? The God I know has created all these tools and more for people to learn, to teach, to implement.
I would like to here more about your knowledge in the areas of natural healing and other modalities. I'm very interested! Please do share.
Lacey whom I like and respect hasn't been around lately. She isn't an AA person last I knew of and used a naturopathic healer the first plus yr of her sobriety. I would love for her to come and share more in these truly healing and interesting fields that have been around for centuries.
Take Care,
Chris

Hi Chris and thanks for the welcome.
I took an online class a couple of years ago given by Greg Lewis, Ph.D. co-author of "End Your Addiction Now". I read the book, and took notes from the class and can't find mine either.
I wondered if that is where you heard of the use of amino acids.. They gave a complete nutritional program emphasizing L-Glutamine, tyrosine, 5HTP and others. I did it for a while and I believe it helped, but gradually stopped taking all the supplements... until the last few days, like I said, I have loaded up on L-Glutamine. I think that may be the amino acid my body lacks the most. As you may know Roger Williams is a pioneer in researching the nutritional aspects of alcoholics.
Other natural things I do are meditation, as advised in the "Positive Addiction" book, yoga, transformational breathing, low or no sugar, and other dietary measures. I also try to get proper exercise, fresh air, sunshine, and oh yea, lots of WATER.
I have read a lot of books about nutrition, addictions, holistic health, etc. and prefer to focus on health and feeling good rather than "trying to not drink". I have had periods in my life when I felt great, when I actually DO what I know to do. When I let myself get stressed, or don't eat "right", I feel overwhelmed and that's when I am more likely to want to drink...
All for now. :-)

I don't know about things for cravings but I know that I feel better since taking St. John's Wort for depression. My pal Idgie is the one that turned me on to it.
Hi Kitty, I know Dr. Gant ( the other co-author) personally, his products has helped me tremendously.
