I was given loads of samples of Lunesta yesterday and I wanted to know if anyone else has been prescribed this and if so how did it relate to other sleep meds. I used to take trazadone for a year and then came off those when I got pregnant. He said he'd prescribe them back to me but he wanted me to try this first. Anyone?
Stacey
I think Ambien works better but it may just be me...Lunesta made everything taste funny...I didn't like it...
Hi-
I tried them and they seemed to work for me but I didn't take them long and for some reason went back to ambien, since that's the sleeping pill I was given in the past. I have heard that lunesta "supposedly" is okay for long term use, whereas with ambien it shouldn't be taken for long periods of time. I think they say only 7-10 days. Anyways, I don't know if this helps.. someone else here probably has more experience than I do with lunesta.

I didn't like the metallic taste in my mouth either and I find it didn't work so well. Maybe it was just my body. Seems to get rave reviews.

Instead of running for another pill, why don't you try letting your body heal and learn to sleep on its own? The problem with sleeping pills is not only are you still medicating with a pill that can be abused, you are still relying on pills to "fix" you. It is possible to sleep without pills if you let your body learn how. If you take sleeping pills there will be another withdrawal to go thru when you want to stop. Do you really want to go thru that again? If you MUST take something, take trazadone. It's non narcotic. They say these new pills are non addictive but I don't believe them. And as far as being safe for long term use, why would anyone want to be on sleeping pills for a long time? Didn't we learn anything from the opiates?

I liked trazadone and came off of it after a year with no problems. It may have been because I was pregnant and didn't want to take anything, but I have had sleeping problems since I can remember. I would do it naturally but I have got to have my sleep. If you think I'm a mess WITH sleep, oh lord I can't function and I don't want to pass out on the couch with my kid to fend for herself...or snap my baby's head off.
I think if you take anything to sleep for a long time you will have some sort of withdrawl, be it just mental or whatever

If you can take a sleep aid, short term with your doctors knowledge of your medical/abuse history then follow his advice. Short term only, or as needed. You can become dependent on them, long term.
IMO, Trazadone is better due to the nature of the drug, and even though it is non-addictive, you will or can become dependent on it as well. I said in another thread, insomnia for me is a killer in itself. I must to have 8 hrs or more sleep to function. Everyone is different, some don't have the luxury of waiting months on end for their bodies to adjust. Insomnia regardless of your surroundings, small kids, jobs, school, caregivers etc, effects people differently, can and does cause relaspes. It is critical in the beginning stages of WD that one sleeps.
I am curious, has anyone ever been addicted to Ambien or any Sleep Aid prescribed by their doctor? If so, what were the WD like?

Stacy any sleeping pill is quite dangerous for anybody to become addicted let alone us addicts.
Does your doctor know your an addict?
The pill is O.k for a short term 5-7 days max to get your sleep pattern back. I would run from any sleeping pill.

Brook, I got addicted to Ambien years ago when they first came out and the doctors said "No Way, they aren't habit forming" Yeah right... They damn sure are and when I came off of them it felt like a million ants crawling out of my skin 24/7 plus I could get NO sleep. I didn't get sick like klucking from opiates but I sure as Hell felt bad and I told the doctors to never give me the damn Ambiens again, that THEY WERE HABIT FORMING.... Low and behold, what do ya know, now they are a schedule IV narcotic. Everytime I see the commercial for the new Ambien CR and it says that it is not a narcotic, I just want to smash the television cause that commercial is a big fat lie.
`brook.......your situation is not unique
sleep, and the feared "lack of" is a giant issue and i do mean GIANT
you are obviosly a fan of my working class hero, so i will share what i have learned here
pills are the problem
not the solution
It is in an addicts nature, to find the easier, softer way to every problem we encounter.

You think it was a luxury waiting months on end for our bodies to learn to sleep again? I walked around in a daze for months but got thru it. No, I didn't have to work but I had a life. I managed to get working on recovery instead of worrying constantly about whether I was sleeping or not. I learned to make the most of my time while I was awake and still managed to get to meetings and do the day to day things. I guess the difference was I was done with medicating and was willing to do what I had to do to stop.
This part is not aimed at Brooke...
This might sound bitchy but I am so tired of people much younger than me whining about sleep or lack of it. It comes down to, what length are you willing to go to get off substances. When any newcomer comes here asking for help with withdrawal and insomnia there are too many people telling them to go ahead and substitute the drug they're getting off of with another drug. How about giving advice about NOT taking drugs for every little discomfort and face recovery,.

wow 12 step
what a perfect world you live in...must be nice...i guess that means that we shouldnt take gravol when we are sick and in withdrawl either, or vitamins to help us through the shakes...they are all pills....but not the DOC.
I congratulate you for living a life without any aids whatsoever, I do think that if we can do it a softer way, and it gets us to where we want to be..why not?
Sobriety is a great goal, no matter how we get there, or how much or little we suffer to do so......
Hang in there Stacey.keep being honest with your Dr.
will email you again later.
hugs,

That depends, Ali. Where do you want to be and how long do you want to take to get there? If you can find an easier softer way that works, congratulations. But, ya know, there are very few pills out there that don't cause some kind of discomfort when you stop and I'm not talking antibiotics or pills that are necessary to live.I'm talking crap like sleeping pills and tranquilizers and even antidepressants. There's withdrawal from them too. Yeah I do live in a wonderful world and I do it drug free because I worked to get that way. It didn't happen over night, believe me.
OK I'm getting off the soap box now.

This is a great topic! Controversial but in my eyes of course MY way is the proper way! LMAO ME ME ME!
I slept for an average of 2-4 hours per night my first 7 months clean. I was tempted and almost did order valium online (even though I was busted ONLINE). Valium was not my drug of choice in any way, shape or form. I was getting clean and there was NO WAY I was going to put more sh** in my body. I inquired to the Tx counselors and many others. It was clear to me that I NEEDED to feel again and to dull myself up and screw up my body chemistry any further was counterproductive to my goal of feeling my normal self again. How was I suppose to know what healthy felt like if I was screwing with my body chemistry all over again?
I went to Jail that seventh month for 2 months and came out and started making amends. It was within in that week that I was sleeping nine hours again for the first time clean. I have slept no less than 6 hours since I started cleaning up my past. WHAT A DEAL Goes to show ya! Thats how I handled it. My acceptance of not sleeping made the whole deal much smoother.
Trazadone? I used eat that crap nightly, handfulls. Good to bring me down when I was tweeked. Not addictive? I was...and I excelled at it.

I am not searching for a sleeping pill because any withdrawl is making me not sleep... I just have NEVER been able to sleep well. I lay awake for HOURS while my husband is asleep before his head hits the pillow. I would rather take a pill and sleep through the night than not.

You are way too young to have to depend on a pill to sleep. Have you been to any specialists? Stick with the trazadone if you must take something but try getting off of it after a couple of months and see what happens. I see a lot of people only needing it for a short time. They would just grow out of it after being in recovery for a while. They would forget to take it and sleep just fine. Maybe that could happen to you. You don't want to spend your life being dependant on a pill, honey. Trust me. I did and regret it.
