I've been practicing meditation for about 5 years now. I wouldn't characterize myself as chemically dependent, but 1) before I started meditaiton, I would say that I was very Type A and 2) alcoholism and marijuana abuse runs in my family, so I was prone to becoming addicted. Since I've been meditating, 1) my cravings for overeating or other compulsive behaviors have significantly decreased, 2) other people's negativity doesn't affect me like before. I've become a sort of Teflon personality; things just slide off and don't affect me. 3) My mood swings have stabilized. Very little ups and downs, just middle of the road peacefulness. I realize that my problems aren't as severe as most of the rest of you, but the many scientific studies done on meditation have shown that regular meditation is associated with decreased substance use. I hope that this technique can help you; I know that it has made a world of difference for me. The websites I would recommend are www.srcm.org, www.sahajmarg.org, and www.tm.org. best of luck with your recovery process.
Meditation is a very effective way of managing addictive behaviours. It allows users to gain some sepparation from the thinking whch drives their behaviour and with practice allows people to gain hightened states of awareness and the kind of peak experiences that addicts are seeking. Meditation allows people the opportunity of literally getting out of their minds without chemical assistance. I run an addiction programme base in London uk which focusses on the use of meditation to treat addiction we are seeing the most amazing results -

Hi there,
Im interested in visualization meditations for addiction recovery. Themes like self esteem, forgiveness, the inner child, compassion, all around the 12 step Program.
I am directing these kind of meditations as community service in a low budget recovery center.
Anybody out there doing something like this?
