my husband hasbeen in a recovery program for methadone.we have a problem with the sexual side affectsof methadone.its virtually impossible to get a erection or to keep it.also it took away his desire. any suggestions?
hmmm, I don't know about this one. Guess the only advice I could give is call his doctor? sorry,
Methadone certainly affected my sexual desire and I am female. I've heard that men on methadone do have a hard time not necessarily getting an erection, but ejaculating. But it also has been told to me by men on MMT that they had a hard time with sexual desire - therefore getting an erection should be a problem there as well. While serving as a patient advocate at the methadone clinic this seemed to be apparent in about 70% of the male patients who answered this question in a survey we did.
Personally, I think that the methadone becomes the desire, just like any other opiate and puts all other human desires aside (except for eating). As you might have guessed I have gone from being a methadone advocate to preaching against the use of methadone unless there is no other choice in the search for recovery. However, that is my opinion and mine alone. Strictly based on my own experience with that form of "recovery". It is a necessiary tool for some people though and should not be discounted if it works for them and they can function as a productive human being. I couldn't, but I've seen others do fairly well on it, however, most all on MMT say it has its price to pay in some manner.

Hi,
my boyfriend is on methadone and this was a problem he had (in terms of sex drive). we found the time of day he took his methadone made a difference, to some extent. it is difficult to have sex soon after, but if he takes it in the AM, evenings tend to be better. It is/was hard for me though; lack of desire made me feel insecure, had to come to terms with it being the medication.
best,
