Today my doc is switching me from methadone to subutex entirely. I have been on methadone for years and am worried to go off completely. Anyone else done this successfully?
Hi Zuma,
You have probably already done the switch from Meth to Sub by now. Hope you are feeling o.k. It's been a while since I first switched. I have been on Sub for a while now. Slowly reducing.
I found the first week was the hardest. It was more that Sub is a different feeling from the Meth. I didn't hang out that much from the switch. They put me on 8mg and I stayed on 8mg for quite a while.
I don't regret the switch at all and i was just as hesitant as you are now about the change. Better the evil you know right, wrong.
hang in there, once you get over the first couple of days you will feel fine.
I much prefer the Sub to the Meth and it is easier to withdraw off.
I'm now down to 2mg. The drop from 8mg slowly down to 4mg I hardly felt. 4mg down to 2mg was a little harder. I also tried to jump off at 3.6mg (just cos' I am so sick of the s***); not a good idea, believe me.
I guess you could say that I am now stable at 2mg and will probably stay on 2mg for a while. Gabbi is a great person to talk to as well about Sub and staying in a positive frame of mine.

Sidney,
Thanks for the response. I've been on methadone for maybe six years but still chippin with heroin until I came to this program 17 days ago. I read your posts with Gabi yesterday and I was thrilled to hear you actually stay clean off heroin while on subutex. I feel like I've just discovered a miracle with this new drug. I'm in Cali and subutex isn't well known here. It's the first hope I've ever had to stay completely off heroin and methadone.
Hope your feeling well with your detox. You're almost through the tunnel.

Hi Zuma,
Just came back from dosing. Although I have been clean off H for 2,3 years it took I long time to get there. When I tried to jump off the Sub a few weeks ago; by day 5 a was so sick that I started to look through some old phone numbers to see if I could score. I didn't break (thank god), but when you are sick it's easy to revert to old ways. Luckily the nurses and doc's here are pretty good and they put me back on the Sub without to much hassle.
If jumping off and hanging out for 5, 6 days taught me anything it is that this experience will always be with me,even when I am finally off everthing. It's something that you can get over but never forget.
If you are serious about getting clean you can do do it. Stick with the Sub. I just met a couple up at the clinic this morning (it's 8.15am here in Australia) and they had both come off the Sub successfully. They had both been on the Meth for 6 years or more and had switch to the Sub and then come off slowly over 10 months. They said it was a lot easier than any of the other ways.
It gives me a lot more hope when I meet others that have done it. It can be done.
As far as using goes, Sub is the better choice (I think) to keeping clean.

Sidney,
I am just so excited to hear all of you people making it with this drug I only just discovered. I was on methadone for six years and at the end my Dr. was prescribing me 140 to 160 mg. per day. I have been told I should never go off meth maintence because of my history. Well, now I know better. So today I did no methadone and Dr. gave me 18mg. of subutex. Not bad. If I had any symptoms they were anxiety and crawling skin. He suggested a light benzo like ativan or klonopin just for two days, no more.
So, this is my first step toward freedom and really my first true hope of ever living completely drug free.
Thank God and the pharmos for this miracle drug.
Now, if I can only get off of it someday.

Zuma, i am right in thinking your in america : soare you on subutex or suboxine because they are differrnt drugs, the reason I ask is because here in the uk they prescribe subutex, however from what I can gather in america they usually prescribe suboxine- subutex is totally made up of the drug buprenorphine, suboxine is part buprenorphine part naltexone, If you are being prescribed suboxine the transition from meth is a little harder than the transition from meth to subutex.
